  1. 1. Comparative optics of prosobranch eyes

    Author : Jan-Olof Seyer; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ampularia; Littorina; Strombus; evolution; visual ecology; summation; convergence; optic nerve; resolution; sensitivity; optics; eye; gastropod; prosobranch; Animal anatomy; animal morphology; Djurs anatomi och morfologi;

    Abstract : Functional aspects of the large diversity of eye design in prosobranch molluscs was investigated using morphological and optical methods. Three species from different habitats were investigated. Littorina littorea from Scandinavian intertidal rock habitats, Strombus raninus and S. gigas from tropical sand-flats and Ampularia sp. 2. 2. Adjusting to the extreme : Thermal adaptation in a freshwater gastropod

    Author : Magnus Johansson; Laurila Anssi; Robby Stoks; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Radix balthica; Lake Mývatn; geothermal springs; thermal adaptation; isolation by environment; population structure; gene flow; cogradient variation; AFLP; thermal preference; CTmax; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Temperature is a ubiquitous force influencing biological processes ranging from cellular responses to life span. The thermal environment for many organisms is predicted to change with globally increasing temperatures and studies conducted in natural systems incorporating various evolutionary forces, such as gene flow, is needed. 3. 3. Living on the edge : effectiveness of buffer strips in protecting biodiversity on boreal riparian forests

    Author : Kristoffer Hylander; Christer Nilsson; Bengt Gunnar Jonsson; Ellen Macdonald; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; boreal forest; bryophyte; buffer strip; ecological boundary; edge effect; headwater stream; land snail; liverwort; moss; phytometer; riparian forest; substrate; terrestrial gastropod; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the ecological consequences of buffer strip retention on riparian and terrestrial biodiversity. Earlier studies on forest buffer strips have evaluated their effectiveness in relation to water quality and aquatic biota. However, forests along streams are species rich habitats for many organism groups. READ MORE

  5. 5. Late Ordovician Faunal Distribution and Ecospace Partitioning in Marine Impact Craters : The Aftermath of the Lockne and Tvären Events

    Author : Åsa M Frisk; Lars Holmer; Jan Ove Ebbestad; Maurits Lindström; Alan Owen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : impact crater; Lockne; Tvären; ecospace; the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : In the Middle to Late Ordovician a boost of marine biodiversity occurred which is regarded as the most rapid diversity in Earth’s history, and termed the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. This time is also unique in that at least four marine meteorite craters with a good record of post-impact sediments are preserved in Baltoscandia. READ MORE
