  1. 1. Beta functions and multi-scalar gauge theory

    Author : Nadia Flodgren; Bo Sundborg; Konstantin Zarembo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multi-scalar theory; gauge theory; theoretical physics; renormalization group theory; high-energy physics; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : In this licentiate thesis, we provide the context and background for our work One-loop algebras and fixed flow trajectories in adjoint multi-scalar gauge theory (published in JHEP) on the renormalization group flow for a multi-scalar SU(N) gauge theory. The background consists of a description of renormalization group flow, with a focus on beta functions andhow to find fixed points, and multi-scalar theories. READ MORE

  2. 2. Dualities, Symmetries and Unbroken Phases in String Theory : Probing the Composite Nature of the String

    Author : Johan Engquist; Joseph Minahan; Charlotte Kristjansen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Theoretical Physics; String Theory; M-Theory; Higher Spin Gauge Theory; Super Yang-Mills Theory; Anti-de Sitter Spacetime; Singletons; Massless Higher Spin Gauge Fields; AdS CFT Correspondence; Spin Chains; Semiclassical Strings; Tensionless Limits; Conformal Symmetry; Supersymmetry; Higher Spin Gauge Symmetry; Integrability; Fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : The thesis treats aspects of string/M-theory in anti-de Sitter spacetimes and their supersymmetric completions. By applying the AdS/CFT correspondence, as well as models of spin chains and singletons, we try to attain a better understanding of the underlying symmetries and the unbroken phases of string/M-theory. 3. 3. The Quest for M-theory

    Author : Ulf Gran; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supersymmetry; solitons; gauge symmetry; M-theory; string theory; duality; p-branes; D-branes; superspace; supergravity;

    Abstract : In ten dimensions, there exist five consistent string theories and in eleven dimensions there is a unique supergravity theory. When trying to find the fundamental theory of nature this is clearly an "embarrassment of riches". In the mid 90s, however, it was discovered that these theories are all related via a kind of transformation called duality. READ MORE

  4. 4. BRST and Topological Gauge Theories

    Author : Niclas Sandström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gauge theory; BRST-quantization; topological field theory; BV-quantization; almost product structure APS ; superfield formulation;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the BRST-quantization of gauge theories is discussed. A detailed analysis of the BRST-quantization on inner product spaces is performed for a class of abelian models, including reparametrization invariant ones. General rules how to obtain physical wave functions and propagators are proposed. READ MORE

  5. 5. Torn, Spun and Chopped : Various Limits of String Theory

    Author : Fredric Kristiansson; Ulf Danielsson; Per Sundell; Bo Sundborg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; Theoretical physics; String theory; D-branes; Non-commutative open string theory; AdS CFT; Higher spin gauge theory; BMN; String bits; Fermion doubling; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : For the first time in the history of physics we stand in front of a theory that might actually serve as a unification of it all - string theory. It provides a self-consistent framework for gravity and quantum mechanics, which naturally incorporates matter and gauge interactions of the type seen in the standard model. READ MORE
