  1. 1. Growth hormone and the heart in children

    Author : Anders Nygren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone secretion pattern; Cardiac dimensions; Growth hormone treatment;

    Abstract : Background and Aims: The fact that growth hormone (GH) influences cardiovascular structure and function is well established through both human and animal studies. Despite being secreted in a pulsatile fashion, only the impact of peak GH concentrations on cardiac parameters has previously been reported, and the time-dependency of cardiovascular effects during GH treatment has not been detailed. 2. 2. The Physiology of Chicken Domestication : Involvement of the HPA-axis and the Autonomic Nervous System

    Author : Magnus Elfwing; Jordi Altimiras; Michael Axelsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Domestication; chickens; HPA-axis; autonomic nervous system; heart rate; allometry;

    Abstract : Domesticering är en urvalsprocess för önskvärda egenskaper hos djur som över tid förändrar deras utseende, beteende och genetik. Några exempel av djur som genomgått denna riktade avel är vargen, mufflon, uroxen, vildsvinet och den röda djungelhönan som vi idag känner som hunden, fåret, kon, grisen och slaktkycklingen. 3. 3. Systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis : analyses of candidate genes involved in immune functions, for susceptibility and severity

    Author : Martin Johansson; Solbritt Rantapää Dahlqvist; Ingrid Lundberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SLE; RA; oestrogen; renal disorder; ESR1; PDCD1; PTPN22; association; severity; Rheumatology; Reumatologi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune rheumatic disease with systemic manifestations characterized by auto-antibodies directed against different parts of the cell nucleus including DNA, histones and ribosomes. The systemic inflammation can cause damage to multiple organs, e.g., kidneys, skin, heart, lungs and the nervous system. READ MORE

  4. 4. Statins, Lipids, and Mutations: Consequences for the Heart and Immune System

    Author : Emil G. Ivarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CAAX Proteins; Statins; RHO Proteins; Dilated Cardiomyopathy;

    Abstract : CAAX proteins are a group of proteins that undergo a three-step protein maturation process that renders the proteins carboxyl-terminus hydrophobic and prone to localize to cellular membranes, where they have their primary function. The first step in this process is called prenylation, which is the covalent attachment of a lipid, either a 15-carbon farnesyl or a 20-carbon geranylgeranyl lipid, to the carboxyl-terminal cysteine residue by the enzymes farnesyltransferase (FTase) and geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase-I), respectively. 5. 5. Transcriptional profiling of human embryonic stem cells and their functional derivatives

    Author : Jane Synnergren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transcription; differentiation; human embryonic stem cells; gene expression; Naturvetenskap;

    Abstract : Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) represent populations of pluripotent, undifferentiated cells with unlimited replication capacity, and with the ability to differentiate into any functional cell type in the human body. Based on these properties, hESCs and their derivatives provide unique model systems for basic research on embryonic development. READ MORE
