  1. 6. Genetic variability and cadmium metabolism and toxicity

    Author : Gerda Rentschler; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cadmium; polymorphism; TFRC; SLC39A8; SLC39A14; MT1A;

    Abstract : Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) is ubiquitous in the environment. Human exposure in non-smokers occurs mainly via intake of healthy food like vegetables, cereals, and shellfish. Adverse health effects on kidney and bone at low-level environmental Cd exposure are well-documented in adults. READ MORE

  2. 7. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    Author : Tibor V Varga; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 3. 8. Rule-based Models of Transcriptional Regulation and Complex Diseases : Applications and Development

    Author : Susanne Bornelöv; Jan Komorowski; Claes Wadelius; Joanna Polanska; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Histone modification; Transcription factor; Transcriptional regulation; Next-generation sequencing; Feature selection; Machine learning; Rule-based classification; Asthma; Allergy; Bioinformatik; Bioinformatics;

    Abstract : As we gain increased understanding of genetic disorders and gene regulation more focus has turned towards complex interactions. Combinations of genes or gene and environmental factors have been suggested to explain the missing heritability behind complex diseases. READ MORE

  4. 9. International migration and coronary heart disease

    Author : Ebba Hedlund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; migration; coronary heart disease; country of birth; twins; Public health science; Folkhälsovetenskap; Environmental medicine; Miljömedicin;

    Abstract : In today’s globalised world, with considerable international migration, knowledge about the health of immigrants is becoming increasingly important. In Sweden, about 13% of the population or over one million persons are born outside the country. READ MORE

  5. 10. Genetic and Environmental Risk Factors in the Development of Obesity

    Author : Shafqat Ahmad; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Lifestyle behaviors and genetic variation have clear and distinguishable effects on obesity risk; however, the pattern of disease occurrence within and between populations that differ in their genetic and environmental underpinnings suggests obesity is caused in part by the interaction between adverse lifestyle behaviors and the genetic risk profile of an individual. This thesis aims to investigate the joint effects of genetic and environmental (specifically lifestyle) risk factors for obesity and its comorbidities using cross-sectional and longitudinal epidemiological cohorts and clinical trials.
