  1. 1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    Author : Tibor V Varga; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. 2. On the aetiology of ALS : a comprehensive genetic study

    Author : Caroline Ingre; Peter M Andersen; Rayomand Press; Siddharthan Chandran; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; risk factor; VAPB; SOD1; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; ATXN2; SMN1; SMN2; PFN1; 50 bp deletion in SOD1 promotor; population-specific genetic variations; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a deadly, progressive neuromuscular disease that affects individuals all over the world. About 10% of the patients have a familial predisposition (FALS) while the remainder of cases are isolated or sporadic (SALS) and of unknown cause. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic aspects of stroke : association and linkage studies in a northern Swedish population

    Author : Per-Gunnar Wiklund; Birgitta Stegmayr; Kjell Asplund; Dan Holmberg; Alun Evans; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Internal medicine; stroke; genetics; polymorphism; association; linkage; risk factors; plasminogen activator inhibitor-1; tissue plasminogen activator; angiotensin converting enzyme; angiotensin II receptor type 1; phosphodiesterase 4D; Invärtesmedicin; Internal medicine; Invärtesmedicin; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Stroke is a common, multifactorial cardiovascular disease. A stroke event is the result of traditional risk factors (i.e. hypertension, diabetes, smoking), environmental exposures and genetic factors in a complex interplay. READ MORE

  4. 4. Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis - A study, with emphasis on host genetics, oral microbiota composition, and immunoregulatory networks

    Author : Maria Bankvall; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal lesions. The aetiology is unknown and currently there is no consensus regarding suitable treatment regimens. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic Risk Factors for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus : From Candidate Genes to Functional Variants

    Author : Anna-Karin Abelson; Marta Alarcón-Riquelme; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; SLE; association study; complex disease; genetic; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to identify genetic variants that increase the susceptibility for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease caused by a complex interplay between various genetic and environmental factors. Five different candidate genes were selected through different strategies, and were analysed for association with SLE in an attempt to distinguish some of the underlying mechanisms of this disease.
