  1. 1. Adaptive significance of queen mating frequency in ants : In search of benefits of genetic variability

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Pia J. Gertsch; Uppsala universitet.; [2000]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Organism biology Developmental biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Organismbiologi Utvecklingsbiologi; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : Fitness effects of polyandry, multiple mating by females, were studied on two ant speciesLasius niger and Formica truncorum. Particular emphasis was put on evaluating diploid male load, which happens when homozygosity in the sex determination locus leads to intendedfemales developing into sterile, diploid males. READ MORE

  2. 2. Infidelity in Birds – Causes and Consequences of Extra-pair Paternity

    University dissertation from Göteborg : University of Gothenburg

    Author : Jakob Augustin; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2012]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; extra-pair paternity; genetic benefits; heterozygosity; sex ratio; Riparia riparia; Tringa totanus; Vanellus vanellus; Charadrius alexandrinus;

    Abstract : Forty years ago, more than 90% of bird species were classified as monogamous and not very exciting systems for studies of e.g. sexual selection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Opening Pandora's Box Exploring Flexibilities and Alternatives for Protecting Traditional Knowledge and Genetic Resources under the Intellectual Property Framework

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis

    Author : Frantzeska Papadopoulou; Stockholms universitet.; [2014]
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Traditional knowledge; genetic resources; intellectual property; biodiversity; Rawls; Coase; benefit sharing; patents; Convention on Biological Diversity; TRIPS; bioprospecting; property rights; liability; reward system; Commons; ITPGRFA; Calabresi Melamed; UPOV; FAO; Private Law; civilrätt;

    Abstract : What happens when resources get valuable and scarce? How is Intellectual Property dealing with market failures related to sub-patentable innovation or purely traditional knowledge with interesting applications? The protection of traditional knowledge and genetic resources (TKGR) has been one of the major modern challenges in international IP law. The entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its implementation in national legislation has created more questions than the ones it answered. READ MORE

  4. 4. Non-genetic processes in development and heredity

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Willian T. A. F. Silva; Uppsala universitet.; [2018]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : There is a swiftly increasing amount of empirical evidence that non-genetic factors, such as DNA methylation and small RNAs, play an important role not only in development but also in heredity and, therefore, evolutionary dynamics. One of the most interesting aspects of non-genetic processes is their responsiveness to environmental conditions, which has been shown to affect not only the phenotype and fitness of the individuals directly exposed to the stimulus, but also their offspring even when the stimulus is no longer present, indicating that the transmission of non-genetic factors across generations might work analogously to immunization against recurring conditions.
