  1. 1. INDIVIDUAL GENETIC RESEARCH RESULTS : Uncertainties, Conceptions, and Preferences

    Author : Jennifer Viberg Johansson; M G Hansson; Pär Segerdahl; Sophie Langenskiöld; Marion McAllister; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Incidental findings; genetic risk information; research participants; risk perception; free choice; framing; conceptions of genetic risk; making sense of genetic risk; preferences for genetic risk information;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to the ethical discussion on how to handle incidental findings in biomedical research using sequencing technologies from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Study I and II are theoretical studies that used conceptual analysis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Monitoring gene level biodiversity - aspects and considerations in the context of conservation

    Author : Johan Charlier; Linda Laikre; Nils Ryman; Kjetil Hindar; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; brown trout; conservation genetics; genetic drift; genetic monitoring; effective population size; moose; one-sample approach; spatial genetic structure; statistical power; temporal data; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Abstract : The objectives of this thesis relate to questions needed to be addressed in the context of genetic monitoring for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity for the gene level. Genetic monitoring is quantifying temporal changes in population genetic metrics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    Author : Tibor V Varga; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 4. 4. The Making of Valid Data : People and Machines in Genetic Research Practice

    Author : Corinna Kruse; Boel Berner; Minna Salminen Karlsson; Anne-Jorunn Berg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; biomedicine; genetic research; laboratory practices; cultural practice; professional skill; uncertainty; valid data; humans – machines; objectivity – subjectivity; ethnography; biomedicin; genetisk forskning; laboratoriepraktiker; kulturell praktik; yrkesskicklighet; osäkerhet; giltiga data; människor – maskiner; objektivitet – subjektivitet; etnografi; Technology and social change; Teknik och social förändring;

    Abstract : Avhandlingen undersöker ett centralt steg inom vetenskapliga praktiker: hur laboratorieprov översätts till data som anses giltiga och användbara av forskargemenskapen. Baserat på ett multilokalt fältarbete bestående av observationer och intervjuer i laboratorier för genetisk forskning, visas i avhandlingen hur laboratoriepersonalens yrkesskicklighet, samt normer och ideal om vetenskaplig forskning, formade deras praktiker av att producera giltiga data. 5. 5. Chosen Children? : An empirical study and a philosophical analysis of moral aspects of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and germ-line gene therapy

    Author : Kristin Zeiler; Lennart Nordenfelt; Gunilla Tegern; Karin Sporre; Åge Wifstaad; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Empirical ethics; pre-implantation genetic diagnosis; germ-line gene therapy; qualitative research; philosophical analysis; medical progress; genetic disease; choice; auautonomous; ambivalence; trust; genetic identity; Genterapi; biologisk etik; medicinsk etik; preimplanatorisk genetisk diagnostik; Philosophy subjects; Filosofiämnen;

    Abstract : With pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), genetic testing and selective transfer of embryos is possible. In the future, germ-line gene therapy (GLGT) applied to embryos before implantation, in order to introduce missing genes or replace mutant ones, may be possible. READ MORE
