  1. 1. Genetic variation in structured populations

    Author : Marina Rafajlovic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genetic variation; varying population size; effective population size; mutation; recombination; migration; multiple paternity; geographic structure; tests of neutrality; gene tree; species tree;

    Abstract : It is widely acknowledged that the process of speciation in the presence of gene flow between different ecotypes is common in nature. However, the mechanisms underlying speciation are not understood. READ MORE

  2. 2. Population Fragmentation and Genetic Variation in Grouse

    Author : Jobs Karl Larsson; Jacob Höglund; Stuart B. Piertney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Bonasa sewerzowi; bottleneck; genetic drift; genetic variation; inbreeding; isolation; microsatellites; population structure; Tetrao tetrix; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the genetic variation of two grouse species, the Chinese grouse (Bonasa sewersowi) and the Black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) was examined with neutral genetic markers: microsatellites. Habitat fragmentation and isolation leads to structuring among and loss of genetic variation within populations. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic variation and prostate cancer : population-based association studies in Sweden

    Author : Sara Lindström; Henrik Grönberg; Fredrik Wiklund; John Todd; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; epidemiology; SRD5A2; ERG; progression; genetics; association studies; polymorphism; haplotype; CDH1; AR; CYP17; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Prostate cancer constitutes the most common malignancy and the most common cause of cancer‐related death in Swedish men. A large body of evidence suggests that inherited genetic variants contribute to both development and progression of prostate cancer. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cytochrome P-450 in Drosophila melanogaster : activity, genetic variation and regulation

    Author : Inger Porsch-Hällström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The cytochrome P-450 enzyme system in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, was shown to be inducible, to consist of several isozymes and to have the capacity to metabolize a variety of substrates, thus resembling the corresponding mammalian system. These similarities strengthens the value of Drosophila test systems for the detection of indirect carcinogens and mutagens. READ MORE

  5. 5. Linkage maps in studies of genetic variation - examples from Beta vulgaris

    Author : Thomas Kraft; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytogenetics; Genetics; Beta vulgaris; Linkage maps; genetic variation; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Today, most studies of genetic variation utilise molecular markers, making it possible to detect variation at the DNA level. This has greatly facilitated studies of genetic variation in population and evolutionary genetics, systematics and transmission genetics. READ MORE
