  1. 1. The consequences of DNA lesions for mitochondrial DNA maintenance

    Author : Josefin M. E. Forslund; Sjoerd Wanrooij; Nasim Sabouri; Erik Johansson; Claes Gustafsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mitochondria; mitochondrial DNA; DNA replication; DNA lesions; DNA polymerase γ; ribonucleotide incorporation; medicinsk biokemi; Medical Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Eukaryotic cells have their own energy-producing organelles called mitochondria. The energy is stored in the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule and is produced via the oxidative phosphorylation process inside the mitochondria. Thirteen of the essential proteins required for this process are encoded on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). READ MORE

  2. 2. Development of benzoquinoquinoxaline derivatives as triplex-specific probes : Recognition of DNA structures at repeats sequences

    Author : Helen Bergquist; Rula Zain; Keith Fox; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Triplex; H-DNA; BQQ; BQQ-OP; BQQ-Bodipy; triplet repeat; DNA; non-B-DNA; pkd1; frataxin; Friedreich s ataxia; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Repeat sequences are associated with several human diseases, such as Friedreich’s ataxia, polycystic kidney disease and cancer. These sequences can form non-B-DNA structures, including triplex (H-DNA) DNA, and are associated with genomic instability and altered gene expression. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ribonucleotides in DNA - Application in genome-wide DNA polymerase tracking and physiological role in eukaryotes

    Author : Katrin Kreisel; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Ribonucleotides; DNA instability; DNA polymerase eta; nuclear DNA; mitochondrial DNA;

    Abstract : The genetic code in the eukaryotic cell is stored in the form of DNA, which is more resistant to hydrolysis than RNA. Replication fidelity and DNA repair mechanisms are in place to ensure genomic integrity to preserve the information encoded. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular Genetic Studies of the Blood Group ABO Locus in Man

    Author : Martin L Olsson; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chi sequence; recombination; population studies; blood group serology; erythrocyte; blood transfusion; sequencing; DNA; PCR; genomic; Blood group ABO; allele; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Abstract : The ABO blood group system is undoubtedly the most important genetic and phenotypic marker in clinical transfusion medicine. The A and B determinants are immunodominant, terminally located carbohydrate residues of glycoconjugates on erythrocytes and other cell surfaces. READ MORE

  5. 5. Replication Dynamics in the DNA Damage Response

    Author : Petra Groth; Thomas Helleday; Geroge Iliakis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA damage; DNA replication; homologous recombination; DNA double strand-breaks; ionizing radiation; alkylating agents; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Genetics; Genetik; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Faithful DNA replication is essential and the induction of replication stress may have profound effects on genomic integrity. This is demonstrated by the formation of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs), considered to be the most toxic DNA lesions, at stalled replication forks. READ MORE
