  1. 1. Remote Sensing and GIS : Applications for Groundwater Potential Assessment in Eritrea

    Author : Semere Solomon; KTH; []
    Keywords : Remote sensing; Geographic Information Systems; groundwater; geomorphology; Digital elevation model; lithology; hard rock; lineament; structures; hydrogeology; Eritrea;

    Abstract : An integrated approach with remote sensing, GeographicInformation Systems (GIS) and more traditional fieldworktechniques was adopted to assess the groundwater potential inthe central highlands of Eritrea. Digitally enhanced colorcomposites and panchromatic images of Landsat TM and Spot wereinterpreted to produce thematic maps such as lithology andlineaments. READ MORE

  2. 2. EstimatingChloride concentration in surface water and groundwater duet to deicing salt application

    Author : Eva-Lotta Thunqvist; KTH; []
    Keywords : road; deicing salt; monitoring; chloride; catchment area; river basin; simulation; GIS; groundwater; surface water;

    Abstract : A road in operation along with its traffic can pose aserious pollutant threat to groundwater and surface water inits vicinity. Examples of pollutants are metals from thecorrosion of vehicles, rails and poles and the wear of roadsurfaces and tyres; hydrocarbons from the wear of roadsurfaces, tyres, exhausts, oils; sodium chloride from roadsalt; and hazardous goods discharged in accidents. 3. 3. Remote Sensing and Gis for Groundwater Assessment in Hard Rock Areas. Applications to Water Well Siting in Ghana and Botswana

    Author : Per Sander; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; probabilistic approach; GIS; remote sensing; Ghana; hard rock; Botswana; groundwater assessment; lineaments;

    Abstract : Different types of remote sensing data have been evaluated in this thesis with respect to their potential use in groundwater assessment in hard rock areas. The primary objectives of the study have been (1) to evaluate the interpretation of groundwater indicators from high resolution satellite images and aerial photography and (2) to investigate how remote sensing interpretations subsequently can be integrated with other pertinent data, as a decision support in water well siting under difficult hydrogeological conditions. 4. 4. Subsurface dams in water resource management : methods for assessment and location

    Author : Imran Ali Jamali; Bo Olofsson; Stephen Foster; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Subsurface dams; Groundwater; GIS; Regolith thickness; Groundwater; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Natural groundwater storage can be improved by constructing a subsurface barrier that is a subsurface dam, in order to capture the subsurface flows and raise the groundwater levels (GWLs) in the sediment layers. Subsurface dams are preferable to surface dams because of lower evaporation, higher functionality, lower cost of construction, lessened risk for contamination and the possibility of utilizing land over the dam. 5. 5. Road disasters? Modeling and assessment of Swedish roads within crucial climate conditions

    Author : Alireza Nickman; Bo Olofsson; Per-Erik Jansson; Nils-Otto Kitterød; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Road; Flood; Moisture; Temperature; Groundwater; GIS; Uncertainity; Sweden; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : An efficient maintenance of roads to ensure high accessibility and durability of the transport capacity requires an understanding of how the hydrological response depends on both the road and the landscape characteristics. New methods and data were used to identify and explain interaction between roads and surrounding environment and their influence on hydrologic responses both in watershed scale and road-section scale.
