  1. 6. Past dynamics of a marine-terminating glacier in lower Borgarfjörður, west Iceland - Analyses of glaciotectonic sediments and landforms

    Author : Thorbjorg Sigfusdottir; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glacier dynamics; marine-terminating glacier; glaciomarine processes; thrust-block moraines; glaciotectonics; micromorphology; Early Holocene; Late Weichselian; Iceland;

    Abstract : Large and complete sections through glacial landforms formed in subaqueous environments are rare, impeding our knowledge of their internal composition and the processes responsible for their formation. Following the last deglaciation of the Icelandic Ice Sheet (IIS), a marine-terminating outlet glacier advanced out of the fjord of Borgarfjörður resulting in large-scale glaciotectonic deformation of glaciomarine sediments. 2. 7. Studies of Unusual Seismicity and Long Period Events at the Glacier Overlain Katla Volcano, Iceland

    Author : Kristín Jónsdóttir; Roland Roberts; Björn Lund; Göran Ekström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; Geofysik; Geophysics Specialized In Seismology; geofysik; med inriktning mot seismologi;

    Abstract : Earthquake catalogues are usually dominated by diffusive behaviour consistent with the Omori law of aftershocks. This is investigated in terms of waiting times, i.e. the time between successive events in a time-sorted earthquake catalogue. READ MORE

  3. 8. Near surface atmospheric flow over high latitude glaciers

    Author : Oskar Parmhed; Erland Källén; Branko Grisogono; Haraldur Ólafsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stable boundary layer; Ekman layer; Katabatic flow; gravity wave; low-level jets; Meteorology; Meteorologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis various descriptions of the near surface atmospheric flow over a high latitude glacier is used in an effort to increase our understanding of the basic flow dynamics there. Through their contribution to sea-level change, mountain glaciers play a significant role in Earth’s climate system. READ MORE

  4. 9. Glacial Isostatic Adjustment : Inferences on properties and processes in the upper mantle from 3D dynamical modeling

    Author : Peter Schmidt; Björn Lund; Christoph Hieronymus; Laust Pedersen; Zdenek Martinec; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Observations of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) offers a powerful window into the properties of the Earth's interior. Combined with dynamical modeling of the GIA process we can use the observations to infer properties such as the elastic structure of the lithosphere, the rheology of the mantle and changes in the stress conditions in the Earth. 5. 10. The Shepherds of Þjórsárver. : Traditional Use and Hydropower Development in the Commons of the Icelandic Highland

    Author : Helga Ögmundardóttir; Hugh Beach; Gísli Pálsson; Mark Nuttall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Land use disputes; local peoples; sheep herding; damming; commons; identity; traditions; nationalism; Þjórsárver wetland reserve.; Cultural anthropology; Kulturantropologi; Kulturantropologi; Cultural Anthropology;

    Abstract : This study explores a damming dispute that has been going on for over four decades in Iceland, about whether a dam, Norðlingaölduveita, should be built in the central highland, near the glacier Hofsjökull and the wetland reserve Þjórsárver, or not.  The study focuses on the local resistance against the dam, led by a group of people in the farming community Gnúpverjahreppur, which has its highland grazing commons in the Þjórsárver area.
