  1. 1. Cellular Origin and Development of Glioma

    Author : Nanna Lindberg; Lene Uhrbom; Bengt Westermark; Kristian Pietras; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glioma; brain tumor; PDGF; RCAS TV-A; cell of origin; glial cell; oligodendrocyte progenitor cell; DNA repair; homology-directed repair; RAD51; angiogenesis; histidine-rich glycoprotein; Morphology; cell biology; pathology; Morfologi; cellbiologi; patologi; Molecular Medicine; molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ;

    Abstract : Gliomas are the most common primary tumors of the central nervous system believed to arise from glial cells. Invasive growth and inherent propensity for malignant progression make gliomas incurable despite extensive treatment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Pathophysiology of blood-brain barrier, brain edema and cell injury following hyperthermia : New role of heat shock protein, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide : an experimental study in rat using light and electron microscopy

    Author : Hari Shanker Sharma; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; blood-brain barrier; heat stress; hyperthermia; brain edema; serotonin; nitric oxide; carbon monoxide; heat shock protein; glial fibrillary acidic protein; myelin basic protein; opioids; histamine; catecholamines; naloxone; indomethacin; p-CPA; electron microscopy; immunocytochemistry; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Human Anatomy; anatomi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the molecular mechanisms of hyperthermia induced brain damage in rats. The results clearly establish that hyperthermia caused by 4 h heat stress at 38° C is associated with a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability which seems to be instrumental in causing brain edema and cell injury. 3. 3. Cell motility : the dynamics of the cortical weave of microfilaments and its relation to microtubules and coated vesicles in fibroblasts and glial cells

    Author : Anna-Stina Höglund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Actin and myosin, the major components of the microfilament system are found in most - if not all - eukaryotic cells. In muscle they form the basis of the contractile apparatus which generates the rapid, strong and unidirectional movements that characterizes muscle activity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cell motility : the organization of the microfilament system in cultured cells with special emphasis on the cortical weave of actin filaments

    Author : Roger Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The microfilament system formed by actin, myosin and associated proteins constitutes the molecular basis for many of the motile phenomena which eukaryotic cells express. The organization of this system varies considerably from cell type to cell type, and is characterized on one hand by strictly ordered, more or less flexible arrangements of actin filaments and on the other by actin present in primarily a nonfilamentous form ready to polymerize in response to certain stimuli. 5. 5. Glioma as an Ecosystem : Studies of Invasion, Onco-miR Addiction and Mast Cell Infiltration

    Author : Jelena Põlajeva; Bengt Westermark; Ingemar Ernberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glioblastoma; mast cell; miR-21; RAP1; CXCL12; SOX2;

    Abstract : Despite recent advances in oncology and extensive research efforts, gliomas remain essentially incurable. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM, WHO grade IV) is the most common glioma and may arise de novo or progress from a lower-grade lesion. GBM is characterized by invasive growth, aberrant angiogenesis and necrosis. READ MORE
