  1. 16. Neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y and neural progenitor C17.2 cell lines as models for neurotoxicological studies

    Author : Jessica Lundqvist; Anna Forsby; Åsa Fex Svenningsen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SH-SY5Y; C17.2; in vitro neurotoxicity; cell culture conditions; biomarkers; in vitro developmental neurotoxicity; whole genome microarray; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : We are surrounded by chemicals, thus understanding how exposure to these chemicals affect us during our life is of great social importance. In order to predict human acute toxicity of chemicals, cosmetics or drugs, development of novel in vitro test strategies is required. READ MORE

  2. 17. On neuroinflammation in psychotic disorders

    Author : Carl Sellgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neuroinflammation has been implicated in several psychiatric conditions. Based on experimental studies, the glia-derived tryptophan metabolite kynurenic acid (KYNA) may be especially relevant for positive psychotic symptoms and impaired executive functioning. READ MORE

  3. 18. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Author : Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 4. 19. Regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors : molecular aspects and functional implications

    Author : Tuija Salin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : neurotrophin; nerve growth factor; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; neurotrophin-3; neurotrophin-4; glia; gliosis; neuron; tyrosine kinase receptor; transgenic; null mutation; gene; exon; intron; mRNA;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to study the regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors in a functional aspect. The studies included analysis of neuronal and glial neurotrophin gene expression, that was investigated by using molecular biological techniques. READ MORE

  5. 20. Nerve tissue injury markers, inflammatory mechanisms and immunologic factors in lumbar disc herniation. Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Helena Brisby; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Disc herniation; sciatica; intervertebral disc; nucleus pulposus; nerve root; neurofilament; S-100; cytokines; nitric oxide; glycosphingolipids.;

    Abstract : The general concept for sciatic pain has for many decades been mechanical nerve root compression caused by a herniated disc. Recently evidence has indicated a more complex process, with a combination of mechanical and inflammatory/immunologic factors involved. READ MORE
