  1. 1. Sensory neuronal protection & improving regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Andrew McKay Hart; Mikael Wiberg; Angus McGrouther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell death; TUNEL; optical disection; dorsal root ganglion; peripheral nerve; nerve conduit; Schwann cell; glial growth factor; leukaemia inhibitory factor; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Peripheral nerve trauma is a common cause of considerable functional morbidity, and healthcare expenditure. Particularly in the ~15% of injuries unsuitable for primary repair, standard clinical management results in inadequate sensory restitution in the majority of cases, despite the rigorous application of complex microsurgical techniques. 2. 2. Neuronal and glial differentiation of expanded neural stem and progenitor cells; in vitro and after transplantation

    Author : Cecilia Eriksson Linsmeier; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gtv-a; RCAS A -EGFP; transplantation; cell detection; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; GFP-actin; glial differentiation; neuronal differentiation; neurospheres; glial cultures; bFGF; EGF; cell expansion; cortical primordium; MGE; LGE; CNS; stem- progenitor cells;

    Abstract : In this thesis we have used cells dissected from the lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE), the medial ganglionic eminence (MGE), and the cortical primordium of the embryonic mouse forebrain. The tissue was dissected from either i) wild-type mice, ii) green fluorescent protein (GFP)-, or iii) Gtv-a-expressing transgenic mice, and subsequently grown and expanded in vitro using two different protocols. 3. 3. Effects of Ischaemia on the Neuroretina and Retinal Blood Vessels

    Author : Bodil Gesslein; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; protein kinase C; tumor necrosis factor; mitogen-activated protein kinases; pig; blood vessels; mfERG; Retinal ischaemia; vascular endothelial growth factor; hypoxia-inducible factor;

    Abstract : Identification of the intracellular signal transduction pathways activated in retinal ischaemia may be important in revealing novel pharmacological targets. The retinal blood vessels are key organs in circulatory failure, and in this work the retinal vasculature was therefore examined separately from the neuroretina. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular factors influencing nerve growth : studies on the developing rodent trigeminal ganglion and tooth pulp

    Author : Christina Lillesaar; Ted Ebendal; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The adult tooth pulp has a rich protective sensory innervation from the trigeminal ganglion (TG). The developmental establishment of this exclusively nociceptive innervation is not fully understood today. READ MORE

  5. 5. Neurotrophic Factor Receptors in the Normal and Injured Visual System : Focus on Retinal Ganglion Cells

    Author : Niclas Lindqvist; Finn Hallböök; Anders Kvanta; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell survival; gene expression; neurotrophic factor; receptor; retina; visual system; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Developmental Neurosciences; Medicinsk utvecklings- och neurobiologi;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis is the life and death of adult retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). RGCs are neurons that convey visual information from the retina to higher centers in the brain. READ MORE
