  1. 1. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor. : Expression patterns, neuronal transport, regulation, effects, and receptor dependence

    Author : Andreas C. Tomac; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor GDNF ; neurturin NTN ; persephin PSP ; c Ret proto oncogene Ret ; GPI-linked receptors for the GDNF ligand family GFRas ; transforming growth factor-B TGFB ; Parkinson s disease PD ; dopaminergic DA neurons;

    Abstract : Background: The mammalian nervous system depends upon trophic proteins for survival, growth and adult maintenance. These trophic factors have also been considered as potential therapeutic agents for treating human neurodegenerative disorders. READ MORE

    Abstract : Epilepsy is a neurological disorder, affecting approximately 1% of the population. The high rate of drug-resistance in epilepsy in general (30%), and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in particular, pose a serious clinical problem. Thus, novel treatments for drug-resistant epilepsy is highly warranted. READ MORE

  3. 3. On pathophysiological mechanisms in amyothrophic lateral sclerosis

    Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disease with unknown ethiology. The aim of this study was to increase understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of dying motor neurons and wasting muscle tissue in this particular disorder. READ MORE

  4. 4. Restorative and neuroprotective treatment strategies for Parkinson’s disease: tudies on fetal dopamine cell transplants and GDNF delivery by intracerebral injections and recombinant AAV vectors

    Author : Deniz Kirik; Neurobiologi; []

    Abstract : The intrastriatal 6-hydroxydopamine lesion model in rats is particularly useful in studies testing new therapeutic strategies for Parkinson’s disease. This thesis work (1) describes the characterization of the motor deficits after different types of intrastriatal lesions and identifies the four-site terminal lesion as a model of symptomatic Parkinson’s disease; (2) using the same model, provides evidence that the functional impact of the dopamine cell grafts are dependent on interactions with the host brain; (3) demonstrates that protection or restitution of normal motor function after 6-hydroxydopamine lesions can be achieved if glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor is administered in the striatum at the time of the terminal fiber degeneration. 5. 5. Role of Neuropeptides and Neurotrophic Factors in Seizure Modulation

    Author : Avtandil Nanobashvili; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; brain slice; entorhinal cortex; hippocampus; galanin; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor; neuropeptide Y; epilepsy; kindling; Neurology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi;

    Abstract : The presented thesis explores role of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor a2 (GFRa2), as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) and galanin and their receptors in modulation of seizure activity. We demonstrate that mice lacking the GFRa2 gene (GFRa2-/-) exhibit suppressed seizure generalization in traditional and rapid kindling models. READ MORE
