  1. 6. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 2. 7. Antidepressive and antipsychotic treatments : effects on nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in rat brain

    Author : Francesco Angelucci; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Recently it has been reported that depression and schizophrenia, the two major psychiatric disorders, are characterized by loss of neurons in specific brain regions. Nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are proteins involved in neuronal survival and plasticity of dopaminergic, cholinergic and serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system (CNS). 3. 8. A Muscle Perspective on the Pathophysiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis : Differences between extraocular and limb muscles

    Author : Vahid M. Harandi; Jingxia Liu; Fatima Pedrosa Domellöf; Per Stål; Fawzi Kadi; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neuromuscular junctions; Extraocular muscles; Skeletal muscle; Neurotrophic factor; Wnt; Motor neuron disease; Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; SOD1G93A mice; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a late-onset progressive neurodegenerative disorder. ALS has been traditionally believed to be primarily a motor neuron disease. READ MORE

  4. 9. Toward a restorative therapy for Parkinson´s disease. Studies on the functional efficacy of intracerebral fetal cell transplants and GDNF delivery

    Author : Christian Winkler; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neurophysiology; dyskinesia; L-DOPA; behaviour; transplantation; neuroprotection; GDNF; substantia nigra; striatum;

    Abstract : Parkinson´s disease is characterized by a progressive degeneration of the nigral dopaminergic system. Treatment of disease symptoms using L-DOPA frequently induces side effects such as L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia. READ MORE

  5. 10. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors controlling the differentiation of human midbrain progenitor cells

    Author : Nicolaj Christophersen; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; neurotrophic factors; Parkinson s disease; microarray; dopaminergic; Embryonic stem cells; neural stem cells;

    Abstract : Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor deficits. Levodopa treatment provides marked symptomatic relief. However, within 5-10 years after the start of Levodopa treatment, most PD patients display a gradual loss of drug efficacy. READ MORE
