  1. 16. Genetic variants and the risk of type 2 diabetes

    Author : Anna Jonsson; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; insulin secretion; Type 2 diabetes; genome-wide association studies; genetic association;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing worldwide thereby posing a severe burden on individual and public health. Although this increase can be ascribed to both genetic and environmental factors, until 2007, the genetic factors have been largely restricted to a few candidate genes based upon our limited knowledge of the pathogenesis of the disease. 2. 17. Designing simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation of lignocellulose for improved xylose conversion

    Author : Kim Olofsson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bioethanol; lignocellulose; simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation; xylose fermentation;

    Abstract : Fuel ethanol from lignocellulose is one sustainable alternative to the fossil fuels of today. All sugars in the material must be utilized in order to achieve high overall ethanol yields. Baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been engineered to ferment the pentose sugar xylose from lignocellulose to ethanol. READ MORE

  3. 18. Porous Silicon -an enzyme coupling matrix for micromachined reactors

    Author : Johan Drott; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Instrumentation technology; glucose; biosensor; immobilised enzyme; porous silicon; microreactor; Mät- och instrumenteringsteknik;

    Abstract : The development of a miniaturised silicon wafer integrated enzyme reactor is described. The reactor was micromachined by anisotropic wet etching of (110) silicon. The enzyme glucose oxidase (GOx) was coupled to the reactor surface with standard methods of immobilising enzyme to silica. READ MORE

  4. 19. Short- and long-term effects of long-chain free fatty acids on pancreatic α- and β-cell function

    Author : Charlotta Olofsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetologi; sekretion; Endokrinologi; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; type-2 diabetes.; intracellular free Ca2 ; exocytosis; Free fatty acids; pancreatic α- and β-cells;

    Abstract : We have investigated the in vitro effects of long-chain free fatty acids (FFAs) on mouse pancreatic α- and β-cells by a combination of electrophysiological recordings, intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) microfluorimetry and hormone release measurements. Acute addition of the saturated FFA palmitate to intact islets doubled insulin as well as glucagon secretion in the presence of 1 or 15 mM glucose and the FFA remained capable of enhancing release of both hormones in islets depolarised with high K+ in the presence of the KATP channel opener diazoxide, indicating that alterations of ATP sensitive potassium (KATP) channel activity is not part of the effect. 5. 20. Effects of Ca2+, microRNAs, and rosuvastatin on insulin-secreting beta cell function

    Author : Vishal Ashok Salunkhe; Diabetes - öcellsexocytos; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 2 diabetes; exocytosis; Ca2 ; miR-375; miR-335; rosuvastatin; voltage-gated Na channels; STXBP1; SNAP25; SYT11; glucose homeostasis; beta cell function;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a condition of high blood glucose levels due to insulin resistance and defective insulin secretion. Impaired insulin secretion plays a major role in the pathophysiology of T2D, it is mainly attributed to beta cell function i.e. failure to secrete insulin or reduced beta cell mass. READ MORE
