  1. 21. Plasticization of Biobased Polymers: A Combined Experimental and Simulation Approach

    Author : Hüsamettin Deniz Özeren; Mikael S. Hedenqvist; Richard Olsson; Fritjof Nilsson; Kim Bolton; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plasticization; starch; gluten; simulation; molecular dynamics; glycerol; mjukgörning; stärkelse; gluten; simulering; molekyldynamik; glycerol; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The field of bio-based plastics has developed significantly in recent decades and there is an increasing demand for industries to shift from petrochemical to biobased polymers. Biobased polymers offer competitive properties, and in many cases have advantages in terms of cost. READ MORE

  2. 22. Aerobic Oxidative N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis via Multistep Electron Transfer - Method Development and Applications

    Author : Anton Axelsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; N-heterocyclic carbene; asymmetric synthesis; esterification; glycerol; electron transfer mediator; green chemistry; telescoped reaction; Organocatalysis; aerobic oxidation; dihydropyranone;

    Abstract : Oxidation reactions are ubiquitous in synthetic chemistry, but generally suffer from formation of large amounts of potentially toxic byproducts. Aerial oxygen represents an ideal oxidant since it is inexpensive, non-toxic and only forms water as a byproduct. READ MORE

  3. 23. Effects of plasticizing and crosslinking on the mechanical and barrier properties of coatings based on blends of starch and poly(vinyl alcohol)

    Author : Asif Javed; Lars Järnström; Henrik Ullsten; Peter Rättö; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Citric acid; Glycerol; Polyethylene glycol; Barrier properties; Starch; Mechanical properties; Polyvinyl alcohol; Adhesion; Cross linking; Extrusion coating; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : In the last decades, intensive research has been carried out in order to replace oil-based polymers with bio-based polymers due to growing environmental concerns. So far, most of the barrier materials used in food packaging are petroleum-based materials. READ MORE

  4. 24. Hydrothermal Depolymerisation of Kraft Lignin: The Influence of Capping Agents and Residence Time

    Author : Anders Ahlbom; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; isopropanol; depolymerisation; capping agents; kraft lignin; glycerol; guaiacol; hydrothermal liquefaction;

    Abstract : Lignin, the aromatic macromolecule found in wood and other lignocellulosic biomass, is envisioned as a future renewable source of aromatic compounds that can be used as, for example, chemicals, fuel additives and resins. A way in which this can be realised is by depolymerising the lignin once it has been isolated from the lignocellulosic biomass. READ MORE

  5. 25. Redox balancing in recombinant strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Mikael Anderlund; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; xylose isomerase; xylitol dehydrogenase; xylose reductase; glycerol; xylitol; xylose; E. coli; A. vinelandii; T. thermophilus; S. cerevisiae; P. stipitis; transhydrogenase.; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : In metabolically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae expressing Pichia stipitis XYL1 and XYL2 genes, encoding xylose reductase (XR) and xylitol dehydrogenase (XDH), respectively, xylitol is excreted as the major product during anaerobic xylose fermentation and only low yields of ethanol are produced. This has been interpreted as a result of the dual cofactor dependence of XR and the exclusive use of NAD+ by XDH. READ MORE
