  1. 1. Studies on glycosphingolipids in regenerative medicine

    Author : Angela Barone; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glycosphingolipids; human embryonic stem cells; Cell surface markers; porcine heart valves; xenotransplantation; regenerative medicinr;

    Abstract : Regenerative medicine, including stem cell based therapies and xenotransplantation, is a new and developing field that aims to restore normal function in end stage cell/organ failure. However, in therapeutic settings involving transfer of cells with a different genetic background, these cells will expose the recipient to non-self cell surface antigenic determinants that may evoke an immune response and subsequent graft damage. 2. 2. Studies on glycosphingolipids in infection, immunity and differentiation

    Author : John Benktander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glycosphingolipids; Mass spectrometry; Helicobacter pylori BabA; Vibrio cholerae; Human embryonic stem cells; Glycosyltransferase; PX2;

    Abstract : Cell surface glycoconjugates play a role in many biological processes such as responses to microbial infections, cell-cell interactions, differentiation, and inflammatory responses. The present work is focused on structural characterization of glycosphingolipids with potential roles in adhesion of Helicobacter pylori and Vibrio cholerae, differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells, and as blood group determinants. 3. 3. Distribution of glycosphingolipids in nervous tissue. Immunohistochemical and biochemical studies

    Author : Marie Molander-Melin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Glycosphingolipids; sulfatide; nervous tissue; immunohistochemical analyses; ; biochemical analyses; rafts.;

    Abstract : Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are highly enriched in cell membranes of the mammalian nervous system. Their biological functions are not clarified although recent findings have supported their existence in plasma membrane domains, enriched in cholesterol, sphingomyelin and GSLs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Glycosphingolipid interactions of Helicobacter pylori and F1C-fimbriated Escherichia coli

    Author : Niamh Roche; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Helicobacter pylori; F1C fimbriae; Escherichia coli; glycosphingolipids; microbial adhesion; mass spectrometry;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate glycosphingolipid interactions of the human pathogens Helicobacter pylori and F1C-fimbriated uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Of particular interest were interactions of H. pylori to complex gangliosides, the role played by H. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nerve tissue injury markers, inflammatory mechanisms and immunologic factors in lumbar disc herniation. Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Helena Brisby; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Disc herniation; sciatica; intervertebral disc; nucleus pulposus; nerve root; neurofilament; S-100; cytokines; nitric oxide; glycosphingolipids.;

    Abstract : The general concept for sciatic pain has for many decades been mechanical nerve root compression caused by a herniated disc. Recently evidence has indicated a more complex process, with a combination of mechanical and inflammatory/immunologic factors involved. READ MORE
