1. Asymmetric Synthesis of C-Glycosylated Amino Acids : Incorporation in Collagen Glycopeptides and Evaluation in a Model for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Abstract : This thesis describes stereoselective syntheses of four amino acids, three of which are C-glycosidic analogues of glycosylated amino acids. The overall goal of the project was to probe the interactions between MHC molecules, glycopeptide antigens and T cell receptors, that are essential for development of collagen induced arthritis. 2. Glypican-1: Structural and functional analysis of the N-glycosylated human protein
Abstract : Glypicans are multifunctional cell surface heparan sulphate proteoglycans co-regulating numerous signalling pathways, and are thereby involved in the control of cellular division, differentiation, and morphogenesis. The heparan sulphate (HS) chains are responsible for many of those biological functions; nevertheless recent studies suggest functional roles for the glypican core proteins in mediating the signalling of various growth factors. 3. Symbiotic and pathogenic factors in plant-microbe interaction: Structural basis of C-glycoside metabolism and lipoprotein transport in bacteria
Abstract : The communication between plants and bacteria involves a complex chemical signaling network that mediates responses to various biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as establishing symbiotic relationships between different organisms. The first part of the thesis focuses on a mechanism for symbiotic communication between plants and bacteria and more specifically on how C-glycosylated aromatic polyketide compounds produced by plants can be used as a mechanism for plants to communicate with beneficial bacteria. 4. An approach to the synthesis of O-glycopeptides
Abstract : Synthesis of glycopeptides using a solid phase technique has been performed. The preparation of suitably protected glycosylated amino acids and the successful use of these derivatives in solid phase synthesis of two glycopeptides are described. READ MORE

5. Early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy by mass examinations in primary health care
Abstract : The general objective of this thesis was to describe a system for fundus photography for early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, performed by mobile teams visiting primary health care centres in Stockholm County. Large-scale implementation showed this method to be feasible, acceptable, and popular. READ MORE
