  1. 16. Enzymes involved in heparan sulfate chain elongation : Function of a novel family of tumor suppressors?

    Author : Thomas Lind; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; heparan sulfate; biosynthesis; glycosyltransferase; EXT1; EXT2; UDP-glucosedehydrogenase; KfiC; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Medical and Physiological Chemistry; medicinsk och fysiologisk kemi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS) is a glycosaminoglycan associated with many physiological functions such as regulation of growth factor action and cell adhesion. The HS polysaccharide is synthesized by alternating addition of D-glucuronic acid (GlcA) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) units from the corresponding UDP-sugar precursors. READ MORE

  2. 17. Molecular Genetic Studies of the Blood Group ABO Locus in Man

    Author : Martin L Olsson; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chi sequence; recombination; population studies; blood group serology; erythrocyte; blood transfusion; sequencing; DNA; PCR; genomic; Blood group ABO; allele; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Abstract : The ABO blood group system is undoubtedly the most important genetic and phenotypic marker in clinical transfusion medicine. The A and B determinants are immunodominant, terminally located carbohydrate residues of glycoconjugates on erythrocytes and other cell surfaces. READ MORE

  3. 18. Molecular genetics of human carbohydrate defined blood groups. Studies of the ABO and P blood group systems

    Author : Rudi Steffensen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ABO blood group system; P blood group system; carbohydrate antigen; DNA; sequencing; populations studies; expression studies;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to explore the molecular genetics of the carbohydrate defined blood group ABO and P systems.The blood group ABO system is the clinically most significant system in transfusion medicine. Using modern molecular biology, a number of the ABO alleles have been characterized. READ MORE

  4. 19. Genetics and Expression of Glycosphingolipids in the P1PK and GLOB Histo-Blood Group Systems

    Author : Julia Westman; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glycosphingolipid; glycosyltransferase; null allele; GLOB; P1PK; Blood group;

    Abstract : The glycosphingolipid (GSL) antigens in the clinically important P1PK and GLOB blood group systems are present on erythrocytes as well as other tissues and are so-called histo-blood group antigens. Blood group antigens of carbohydrate nature are products of enzymes, so-called glycosyltransferases, adding sugars in a step-wise manner to an acceptor substrate. READ MORE

  5. 20. Biochemical studies of carbohydrate blood group antigens - Carbohydrate phenotype in relation to cellular glycosyltranferases

    Author : Mette Diswall; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : glycosphingolipid; glycosyltransferase; genetic modification; carbohydrate; mass spectrometry; proton NMR spectroscopy; xenotransplantation; GalT-KO pig;

    Abstract : The possibility to alter the cell surface carbohydrate expression by insertion or deletion of glycosyltransferase genes is a powerful technique to study the biological function of selected carbohydrate antigens. However, shifting the equilibrium between competing glycosyltransferases might lead to unexpected phenotypic effects, such as accumulation of other carbohydrate antigens and exposure of antigen structures that normally are cryptic or present in minute amounts on the cell surface.
