26. Ab initio and phenomenological modeling of materials related to CVD hard coatings
Abstract : This thesis describes the work based on two different tools in computational materials science: a first-principles approach, namely that of density functional theory, and the CALPHAD approach. These two methods were used in this work to calculate properties of materials related to hard coatings, in particular coatings produced with chemical vapor deposition for the purpose of wear protection in cutting tools. 27. Dynamics of wood particle pyrolysis applied to gas-solids fluidisation
READ MORE

28. Modeling lichen performance in relation to climate : scaling from thalli to landscapes
Abstract : Lichens can colonize nearly all terrestrial habitats on earth and are functionally important in many ecosystems. Being poikilohydric, their active growth periods are restricted to periods when the thallus is hydrated from atmospheric water sources, such as rain, fog and high relative humidity. READ MORE

29. Neutron scattering studies of hard metals
Abstract : Since their discovery about 100 years ago, tools made of hard metals have been the enablers of development in various areas: from drilling subway lines for more sustainable cities to the machining of complex next-generation airplane engine parts for reduced CO2 emissions. An increase in properties of hard metals thus leads to efficient operations with shorter lead-time, less environmental footprint, and reduced cost. READ MORE

30. Semiconductor Nanowires: Characterization and surface modification
Abstract : The topic of III-V nanowires is still, after more than two decades, a growing and lively research area. The areas of application are wide and contain such important topics as energy harvesting, cheap and efficient lighting, high efficiency detectors and new types of electronics. III-V materials offer properties superior to the widely used Si. READ MORE
