  1. 11. Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Polymer Brush Functionalized Nanostructures as Thermo-Responsive Gating Systems for Protein Transportation

    Author : Justas Svirelis; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biomolecule transportation; Poly N-Isopropylacrylamide ; polymer brushes; fluorescence microscopy; thermo-responsive polymers; surface plasmon resonance;

    Abstract : Controlling molecule translocation through nanosized gaps is of great interest in novel systems for single molecule analysis and biomolecular membranes. The molecular gating property of thermo-responsive end-grafted poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) polymer brushes on well-shaped gold-silica nanostructures is intended to be investigated for controlled protein transportation via extinction spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy methods below and above PNIPAM lower critical solution temperature (LCST; 32 °C in water). 3. 13. Surface Modification of Cellulose-based Materials for Tailoring of Interfacial Interactions

    Author : Simon Utsel; Lars Wågberg; Simon Biggs; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The awareness of our need for a sustainable society has encouraged the search for renewable, high quality materials that can replace oil-based products. This, in combination with increased competition in the forest industry, has stimulated a lot of research into different types of wood-based materials where cellulose-rich fibers are combined with different types of polymers. Abstract : I den här avhandlingen har atomkrafts mikroskopi (AFM) och kvartskristall mikrovåg med dissipation (QCM-D) används för att undersöka interaktioner i bio-fiber modell system av cellulosa och xyloglukan (XG); en naturligt förekommande polysackarid viktig för tillväxt av träd och andra växter. Dessutom har det avgörande momentet av friktionskrafts-kalibrering studerats för att erhålla noggranna och kvantitativa resultat med kolloidal prob AFM. READ MORE

  5. 15. Enhancing UV-protection of clear coated wood by utilizing reactive UV-absorber and epoxyfunctionalized soybean oil

    Author : Sara Olsson; Mats KG Johansson; Emma Östmark; Mats Westin; Philip Evans; Minna Hakkarainen; Peter Weissenborn; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; UV-protaction; wood; clear coating; UV absorber; epoxy functionalized soybean oil; grafting;

    Abstract : This work presents the development of a new pretreatment for clear coated wood, that aims to increase the photoprotection of exterior wood products, and at the same time make the system more environmentally friendly. The pretreatment comprises the reactive UV absorber 2-hydroxy-4(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-benzophenone (HEPBP), which has a primary epoxy group that can be covalently attached to the hydroxyl groups of the wood substrate.
