  1. 21. Ab Initio Investigation of Interfacial and Grain Boundary Properties of Metals and Alloys

    Author : Changle Li; Levente Vitos; Song Lu; Hongbin Zhang; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials Science and Engineering; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Phase interface (IF) and grain boundary (GB) are both common yet critical planar defects influencing the mechanical and physical properties of polycrystalline materials. Due to the complex nature of IFs and GBs in terms of structure and chemistry, determining the accurate excess energies associated with these defects is challenging for both experimental measurements and theoretical simulations. Abstract : This thesis describes the development of high critical temperature superconducting quantum interference device (high-Tc SQUID) magnetometers based on bicrystal grain boundary and nanowire junctions for the potential use in on-scalp magnetoencephalography (MEG), which is a new generation MEG technique with reduced sensor-to-subject standoff distances.MEG is a method of mapping neural dynamics in the human brain by recording the magnetic fields produced by neural currents. Abstract : This thesis presents a novel approach to integrate chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene into silicon micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) to fabricate different graphene based MEMS/NEMS structures and explore mechanical properties of graphene as well as their applications such as acceleration sensing, humidity sensing and CO2 sensing. The thesis also presents a novel method of characterization of CVD graphene grain boundary based defects. READ MORE
