1. Kinematics and Internal Deformation of Granular Slopes
Abstract : Flow-like mass movement is the most destructive landslide and causes loss of lives and substantial property damage throughout the world every year. This thesis focuses on the spatial and temporal changes of the mass movement in terms of velocity and displacement within the failure mass, and the spatial and temporal distribution of the three dimensional internal deformation of the granular slopes using discrete element method, physical experiments, and natural landslides. 2. Flow and Compression of Granulated Powders : The Accuracy of Discrete Element Simulations and Assessment of Tablet Microstructure
Abstract : Simulations are powerful and important tools for gaining insight into powder processes. Ultimately, simulations have the potential to replace experiments. Thus, accurate models and insight into the essential factors for descriptions of powder behaviour are required. READ MORE

3. Modelling of Granular Materials
Abstract : The aim of this doctoral study is to develop and implement a material model for granular materials. The course of this work was concentrated upon a non-associated plasticity model with yield surface and the flow potential expressed in terms of the mean stress p and the third stress invariants I3. 4. Numerical study of dense particle flows under planar shear
Abstract : In this thesis I conducted numerical simulations to study the flow behavior of dense particle flows composed of hard particles under planar shear using the discrete element method. The simulations were carried out in two dimensional systems, where the particles are modelled as circular discs. The discs are non-Brownian and neutrally buoyant. READ MORE

5. Modelling and Characterisation of Granular Material Flow
Abstract : Granular materials are very common both in nature and in industry, and their extensive use means that there are financial incentives for increased efficiency. There are huge costs related to their use and handling, which is a major motivation for increased knowledge of the behaviour of granular materials at different loading conditions. READ MORE
