  1. 1. Environmental Perspectives on Urban Material Stocks used in Construction : Granular Materials

    Author : Simon Magnusson; Sven Knutsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : The peoples demand of functions and services in cities is the driver for energy and material flows. Most people in the world are now living in urban areas. In order to achieve a sustainable development of cities, both resource use and environmental impact have to be reduced. READ MORE

  2. 2. Investigation of Suffusion in Glacial Till Dam Cores : Testing methods and critical hydraulic gradients

    Author : Ingrid Silva; Jan Laue; Peter Viklander; Thomas Pabst; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; internal erosion; suffusion; glacial till; dam cores; dams; experimental investigation; hydraulic gradient; testing methods; cohesionless soils; granular soils; Geoteknik; Soil Mechanics;

    Abstract : Suffusion is an internal erosion mechanism that occurs in embankment dams when fine grained particles in the dam core are washed out by seepage. Initiation of internal erosion depends mainly on three major factors: grain size distribution of the soil, stress conditions and hydraulic gradient; whilst its continuation depends on the properties of the filter. 3. 3. The influence of soil and contaminant properties on the efficiency of physical and chemical soil remediation methods

    Author : Sofia Jonsson; Mats Tysklind; Peter Haglund; Staffan Lundstedt; Tuula Tuhkanen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fenton’s reagent; ozone; solvent washing; granular activated carbon; GAC; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract :  A vast number of sites that have been contaminated by industrial activities have been identified worldwide. Many such sites now pose serious risks to humans and the environment. Given the large number of contaminated sites there is a great need for efficient, cost-effective  remediation methods. READ MORE

  4. 4. Predicting surfacing internal erosion in moraine core dams

    Author : Hans Rönnqvist; Anders Wörman; Hans Bergh; Kaare Høeg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; internal erosion; internal stability; filters; moraine core; embankment dams; sinkholes; internal erosion assessment; Geoengineering and mining engineering; Geoteknik och gruvteknik;

    Abstract : Dams that comprise broadly and widely graded glacial materials, such as moraines, have been found to be susceptible to internal erosion, perhaps more than dams of other soil types. Internal erosion washes out fine-grained particles from the filling material; the erosion occurs within the material itself or at an interface to another dam zone, depending on the mode of initiation. 5. 5. Moisture Influence on Structural Behaviour of Pavements : Field and Laboratory Investigations

    Author : Farhad Salour; Sigurdur Erlingsson; Guy Doré; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Falling Weight Deflectometer FWD ; backcalculation; unbound material; subgrade; seasonal variation; moisture content; spring-thaw; drainage; pavement stiffness; field test; pavement instrumentation; resilient modulus; permanent deformation; repeated load triaxial test; unsaturated soil; matric suction.; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Byggvetenskap; Transportvetenskap; Transport Science;

    Abstract : The structural behaviour of pavements in cold regions can considerably be affected by seasonal variation in environmental factors such as temperature and moisture content. Along with the destructive effect of heavy traffic loads, climatic and environmental factors can considerably contribute to pavement deterioration. READ MORE
