16. Functional studies of the ubiquitin proteasome system using GFP based reporters
Abstract : Ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation is of paramount importance for cellular processes such as cell cycle progression, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis and disposal of misfolded and aberrant proteins. Moreover the ubiquitin-proteasome system is the main producer of peptides used by major histocompatibility complex class 1 for antigen presentation. READ MORE

17. Temporal events in neuronal differentiation and cell death : expression and processing of the Alzheimer's amyloid precursor protein family and a protein at the nuclear pore
Abstract : The present study had two major objectives: 1) to elucidate the involvement of Alzheimer’s amyloid precursor protein (APP) family in neuronal differentiation, and the effect of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-linked mutation APPV642I on signal transduction; 2) to investigate the fate of the nuclear pore complex protein POM121 during apoptosis and to examine the possibility of using green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labelled POM121 as a non-invasive sensor of apoptosis in living (non-fixed) cells.APP is the parent protein of the b-amyloid peptide, which is the major peptide constituent in the “senile plaques” of AD. 18. Dynamic protein trafficking of the nuclear membrane and in peroxisomes
Abstract : The cell nucleus is enclosed by the nuclear envelope (NE), a double lipid membrane separating the nucleoplasm from the cytoplasm. Transport of macromolecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm takes places through nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) in a selective and energy dependent manner. READ MORE

19. Neuronal and glial differentiation of expanded neural stem and progenitor cells; in vitro and after transplantation
Abstract : In this thesis we have used cells dissected from the lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE), the medial ganglionic eminence (MGE), and the cortical primordium of the embryonic mouse forebrain. The tissue was dissected from either i) wild-type mice, ii) green fluorescent protein (GFP)-, or iii) Gtv-a-expressing transgenic mice, and subsequently grown and expanded in vitro using two different protocols. 20. Used but not Sensed - The Paradox of D-xylose Metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract : The realization that the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels is having serious effects on the environment and the climate, together with the ever-growing need for fuels, has led to the development of the concept of the biorefinery. Biorefineries are refineries in which fossil resources, such as oil, are replaced by renewable biomaterials to produce biofuels and biochemicals. READ MORE
