1. Ultrasound features of human carotid plaques
Abstract : Atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries are common in a middle-aged population. When a carotid plaque ruptures it may result in a cerebrovascular event. However, only a minor part of carotid plaques will eventually rupture. Finding those plaques is essential to decide the most appropriate treatment strategy. READ MORE

2. Assessing carotid plaque structure
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death and disability in the western world. Its clinical complications include acute myocardial infarction, sudden death and stroke. Thirty to 40 % of all ischemic strokes are caused by a carotid stenosis. READ MORE

3. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study
Abstract : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4). 4. Carotid artery disease : plaque features and vulnerability
Abstract : Background: Atherosclerosis is an important cause of stroke. Ultrasound offers the convenience of real-time and detailed assessment of carotid plaque features as well as arterial wall thickening and composition. READ MORE

5. Vascular ultrasound for the assessment of carotid atherosclerosis
Abstract : Background: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a common cause for mortality globally, and is expected to remain the single leading cause of death as the global population ages and as life expectancy increases.Cardiovascular screening models have been developed, and continue to be developed, to identify individuals at high-risk of CVD.
