1. Distributed thermal response tests : New insights on U-pipe and Coaxial heat exchangers in groundwater-filled boreholes
Abstract : U-pipe Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHE) are widely used today in ground source heating and cooling systems in spite of their less than optimal performance. This thesis provides a better understanding on the function of U-pipe BHEs and Investigates alternative methods to reduce the temperature difference between the circulating fluid and the borehole wall, including one thermosyphon and three different types of coaxial BHEs. 2. Numerical Simulations of Flows around Trains and Buses in Cross Winds
Abstract : When cruising in strong winds, ground vehicles can experience strong aerodynamic forces and moments that may increase drag, reduce their stability, generate noise and induce accidents in the case of strong side winds. However, prevention of the unwanted influences of side winds requires that the flow structures around vehicles are fully understood in both the instantaneous and time-averaged flow. READ MORE

3. Computational Verification Methods for Automotive Safety Systems
Abstract : This thesis considers computational methods for analysis and verification of the class of automotive safety systems which support the driver by monitoring the vehicle and its surroundings, identifying hazardous situations and actively intervening to prevent or mitigate consequences of accidents. Verification of these systems poses a major challenge, since system decisions are based on remote sensing of the surrounding environment and incorrect decisions are only rarely accepted by the driver. 4. Improving Fixed Wing UAV Endurance, by Cooperative Autonomous Soaring
Abstract : The ever-expanding use and development of smaller UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) has highlighted an increasing demand for extended range and endurance for this type of vehicles. In this thesis, the development of a concept and system for autonomous soaring of cooperating unmanned aerial vehicles is presented. READ MORE

5. InAS Quantum Dots for Laser Applications and Pedogogical, Gender, and Multicultural Aspects in Engineering Education
Abstract : This thesis builds on new cross-disciplinary research between engineering and educational sciences. Recently, two other theses that combine research in physics and education (Åke Ingerman, 2002, and Tom Adawi, 2002) have been completed in Sweden. This thesis consolidates a trend that can benefit both disciplines. READ MORE
