  1. 1. Ground freeze-thaw, snow and roads in northern Sweden

    Author : Maria Sarady; Eva Sahlin; Magnus Bohlin; Hanna Ridefelt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Ground freeze-thaw; snow depth; roads; northern Sweden; geography; Geography; Geografi;

    Abstract : In this thesis freeze-thaw along roads in northern Sweden is examined. The examinations are put in a context of changing climate and its amplification towards the Arctic region on earth. The research focuses on the impact of a warmer climate on ground freeze-thaw and in exten- sion road maintenance in the region. READ MORE

  2. 2. Artificial Ground Freezingin Clayey Soils : Laboratory and Field Studies of Deformations During Thawing at the Bothnia Line

    Author : Teddy Johansson; Staffan Hintze; Håkan Stille; Sven Knutsson; Kauko Kujala; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Artificial ground freezing; AGF; thaw deformation; deformation; thawing; frost heaving; Bothnia Line.; Artificiell markfrysning; artificiell jord- och bergfrysning; AGF; tiningsdeformation; deformation; tining; tjälhävning; Botniabanan; Geoengineering; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Artificial ground freezing as a method to temporarily stabilize and create hydraulic sealing in urban as well as in rural areas has been used in a number of Swedish construction projects, particularly during the last decade. One problem with the freezing of soil and rock is that fine-grained clayey types of soils have showed a tendency to under certain circumstances, during the thawing process, create a pore water overpressure and to consolidate, despite a change in the external loading conditions. 3. 3. Stabilization-solidification of high water content dredged sediment : Strength, compressibility and durability evaluations

    Author : Gregory Makusa; Kauko Kujala; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Dredging activities at ports and harbors are inevitable for safe navigation of ships and vessels. The outcomes of dredging are huge volumes of dredged materials, which can range from very fine and contaminated sediments to sands and gravels. The coarse sands and gravels can be directly used in civil engineering applications. READ MORE

  4. 4. Temporal Characteristics of Boreal Forest Radar Measurements

    Author : Albert Monteith; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; antenna array; Synthetic aperture radar; temporal coherence; tomography; backscatter; remote sensing;

    Abstract : Radar observations of forests are sensitive to seasonal changes, meteorological variables and variations in soil and tree water content. These phenomena cause temporal variations in radar measurements, limiting the accuracy of tree height and biomass estimates using radar data. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Torneträsk System - A basis for predicting future subarctic ecosystems

    Author : Didac Pascual; BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; carbon fluxes; ecosystem change; climate projections; rain on snow; modelling; impacts; snow; permafrost; winter warming events;

    Abstract : Arctic and subarctic areas have experienced a rapid warming and substantial increases in precipitation in recent decades. The frequency and intensity of some extreme events, such as fires, winter warming events, extreme rainfall, and droughts, has also increased. READ MORE
