  1. 1. Mechanisms for the Influence from Ice Nucleus Aerosols on Clouds and their Indirect Effects: Cloud Modelling

    Author : Deepak Waman; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clouds; Radiation; Ice Nuclei; Primary Biological Aerosol Particles; Ice particles; Secondary ice; primary ice; Aerosol particles; thunderstorm;

    Abstract : The role of multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) as ice nucleating particles (INPs), and of ice formation processes such as time-dependent freezing of various INPs, and various secondary ice production(SIP) mechanisms in overall ice concentration has been evaluated in a range of cloud systems by simulating them numerically with the state-of-the-art ‘Aerosol-Cloud’ (AC) model in a 3D mesoscale domain. Also, the mechanismsof aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) arising from anthropogenic INPs, and the responses to these AIEs from time-dependent INP freezing and SIP processes are investigated in the simulated clouds. 2. 2. Improved Cloud Parameterization in Global Climate Model : Aerosol effects and secondary ice production mechanisms

    Author : Arti Jadav; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cloud; Coud parameterization; Primary ice mechanisms; Secondary ice production; Global climate model;

    Abstract : The response of clouds to the changes in climate is uncertain, and the representation of the cloud-climate feedback is a key challenge in the global circulation models (GCM) for future climate projections. Factors contributing to this uncertainty include processes that involve particles of various sizes and phases, as well as the interactions between these particles and the surrounding atmosphere. 3. 3. Spin ice under uniaxial pressure and magnetic frustration in garnets

    Author : Richard Edberg; Patrik Henelius; Santiago A. Grigera; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magnetism; fysik; spin is; frustrerad magnetism; värmekapacitet; heat capacity; spin ice; physics; magnetism; Material and Nano Physics; Material- och nanofysik;

    Abstract : Frustration is the inability to simultaneously satisfy all interactions. The interest in magnetic frustration has grown during the last decades. The research has among other findings been promoted by the discovery of spin ice which is a frustrated magnetic compound with an exotic ground state and unusual excitations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cold-climate landforms on Mars and Earth-analogues in Svalbard

    Author : Andreas Johnsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mars; Svalbard; Spitsbergen; periglacial; ice; permafrost; Earth-analogues; terrestrial analogues; geomorphology; landforms; solifluction; debris flow; gully; craters; cold-climate;

    Abstract : Periglacial landforms on Earth reflect cold-climate conditions and are intimately related to processes due to the presence of ground ice and perennially frozen ground, permafrost. The overall objective of this thesis is to investigate the potential of Svalbard as an analogue to Mars cold-climate landforms, and explore past and present processes and surface conditions on Mars by inference from morphological counterparts in Svalbard. 5. 5. Sea Ice and Ocean Environmental Applications of Spaceborn SAR

    Author : Sverre Thune Dokken; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Radarsat; SSM I; ERS-1 2; ocean applications; sea ice applications; numerical models; SAR; Arctic Ocean; Envisat; climate change;

    Abstract : The worldwide focus on our changing environment has led to an increased need to observe and characterise a range of environmental phenomena. The Arctic Ocean is particularly sensitive to climate variations. READ MORE
