  1. 1. Mixing Processes for Ground Improvement by Deep Mixing

    Author : Stefan Larsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Deep Mixing; Lime cement columns; Mixing mechanisms; Mixture quality; Field test; ANOVA; Variance reduction.;

    Abstract : The thesis is dealing with mixing processes havingapplication to ground improvement by deep mixing. The mainobjectives of the thesis is to make a contribution to knowledgeof the basic mechanisms in mixing binding agents into soil andimprove the knowledge concerning factors that influence theuniformity of stabilised soil. 2. 2. Prediction of Strong Ground Motion and Hazard Uncertainties

    Author : Behrooz Tavakoli; Ota Kulhanek; Dieter Mayer-Rosa; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; Disaggregation; Ground motion; Monte Carlo simulation; Seismic hazard; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to provide a detailed description of recent methods and scientific basis for characterizing earthquake sources within a certain region with distinct tectonic environments. The focus will be on those characteristics that are most significant to the ground-shaking hazard and on how we can incorporate our current knowledge into hazard analyses for engineering design purposes. 3. 3. Embankments founded on sulphide clay : - some aspects related to ground improvement by vertical drains

    Author : Rasmus Müller; Stefan Larsson; Göran Sällfors; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; geotechnical engineering; embankments; vertical drains; sulphide clay; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : In this thesis, some aspects concerning building embankments founded on sulphide clay are studied, with special reference to ground improvement by preloading in combination with prefabricated vertical drains (PVD’s). The main purpose of the research was to increase empirical knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of sulphide clays subjected to embankment loadings and of the interaction between vertical drains and sulphide clays. 4. 4. Railway Infrastructure Robustness : Attributes, evaluation, assurance and improvement

    Author : Per Norrbin; Ragnar Hedström; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Drift och underhållsteknik; Operation and Maintenance Engineering;

    Abstract : According to the European program Horizon 2020, multifaceted challenges in transportinfrastructure include 1) making infrastructure more resilient to keep pace with the increasing mobility needs; 2) reducing the impact of infrastructure on the environment;and 3) dealing with declining resources to maintain and upgrade transport infrastructure. New design and maintenance approaches must be developed to handle these issues, ascurrent methods are inadequate. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ground Improvement by Dry Deep Mixing Lime-Cement Column Panels as Excavation Support

    Author : Razvan Ignat; Stefan Larsson; Sadek Baker; Sven Liedberg; Masaki Kitazume; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Many urban areas near the coastal regions of Sweden are characterized by post-glacial clay deposits with very low undrained shear strength and high compressibility. Column type ground improvement by the Deep Mixing, DM, method using a binder mixture of lime and cement is commonly used in areas with poor soil conditions due to its cost-effectiveness, predominantly for settlement reduction and to improve the stability of embankments.
