  1. 11. Metabolic responsiveness to growth hormone in children

    Author : Ralph Decker; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Individualized treatment; Growth hormone; Hormonal responsiveness; Metabolic outcome; Prediction model; Body composition; Insulin sensitivity; Leptin; Proteomics SELDI; Apolipoproteins; Thresholds of growth hormone effects; Protein patterns;

    Abstract : Metabolic effects of growth hormone (GH) therapy in short children have not been clearly established owing to the previous lack of controlled trials studying the metabolic outcome in response to different GH doses despite the known effects of GH on insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, and body composition. It has previously been shown that individualized GH doses during catch-up growth significantly reduce the proportion of unexpectedly good and poor responders around a predefined individual growth target in short prepubertal children. 2. 12. Growth hormone and the heart in children

    Author : Anders Nygren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone secretion pattern; Cardiac dimensions; Growth hormone treatment;

    Abstract : Background and Aims: The fact that growth hormone (GH) influences cardiovascular structure and function is well established through both human and animal studies. Despite being secreted in a pulsatile fashion, only the impact of peak GH concentrations on cardiac parameters has previously been reported, and the time-dependency of cardiovascular effects during GH treatment has not been detailed. 3. 13. Long-term effects of growth hormone replacement therapy in growth hormone deficient adults

    Author : Galina Götherström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : growth hormone; body composition; bone mass; bone density; muscle strength; lipids; glucose metabolism; adult onset GHD; childhood onset GHD; gender;

    Abstract : Deficiency of growth hormone (GHD) in adults results in abnormal body composition, reduced bone mass and muscle strength, deteriorated cardiovascular risk factors. Short-term GH replacement reverses many of the symptoms associated with adult GHD. READ MORE

  4. 14. Receptors for growth hormone and prolactin. Regulation and activation

    Author : Gunnel Hellgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone; GH receptor; Janus kinase; GH sensitivity; 5 -untranslated region; prolactin; prolactin receptor adipose tissue; liver; skeletal muscle; epidermal growth factor receptor; tyrosine kinase; kinase activity;

    Abstract : Cytokine receptor activation is dependent on ligand-induced receptor dimerization or oligomerization and subsequent activation of several intracellular proteins. Activation of Janus kinases (Jaks) is probably the first intracellular event that occurs after receptor dimerization. READ MORE

  5. 15. Growth Hormone and Gender. Studies in Healthy Adults and in Patients with Growth Hormone Disorders

    Author : Britt Edén Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Growth hormone; gender; ambulation; oral contraceptives; epinephrine; GH treatment; age; E2-implant; IGF-I; octreotide; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The use of a new, more sensitive immunoassay for growth hormone (GH) revealed that the serum levels in men were lower than expected in sera drawn ambulatory in the morning after an overnight fast and that the gender difference was more than 10 times greater than reported. These observations led to a more thorough study on the impact of gender and sex steroids on the levels of GH and other hormones in ambulatory morning samples and over a 24-hour period. READ MORE
