  1. 6. Expressions of mercury-selenium interaction in vitro

    Author : Peter Frisk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; growth inhibition; inorganic mercury; interaction; organic mercury; selenite; selenomethionine; toxicity; uptake; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi; Biomedical Radiation Science; biomedicinsk strålningsvetenskap;

    Abstract : Interaction between mercury and selenium has previously been observed both in man and in animals. The aim of this work was to study expressions of interaction between mercury and selenium in human K-562 cells. READ MORE

  2. 7. Regulatory Effects of TGF-β Superfamily Members on Normal and Neoplastic Thyroid Epithelial Cells

    Author : Åsa Franzén; Paschalis Sideras; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; activin; BMP; cadherin; carcinoma; cell cycle arrest; dedifferentiation; EGF; growth inhibition; invasion; Smad; TGF-β; thyroid; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Pathology; patologi;

    Abstract : Thyroid growth and function is partly regulated by growth factors binding to receptors on the cell surface. In the present thesis, the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily members have been studied for their role in regulation of growth and differentiation of both normal and neoplastic thyroid epithelial cells. 3. 8. Experimental therapies of malignant glioma : with emphasis on angiogenesis inhibition

    Author : Maria Sandström; Roger Henriksson; Mikael Johansson; Anja Smits; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glioma; angiogenesis; VEGF; tyrosinekinaseinhibitor; ZD6474; plasminogenactivator; tPA; uPA; proteomics; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Malignant glioma consists of a group of diseases where the localisation and the nature of the disease makes treatment an extreme challenge. Two important biological features of malignant glioma cells are their infiltrative growth and their ability to induce angiogenesis. READ MORE

  4. 9. The role of apoptosis in growth plate cartilage during normal and abnormal growth

    Author : Dionisios Chrysis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Apoptosis; growth plate; dexamethasone; cytokines;

    Abstract : Longitudinal bone growth occurs at the growth plate where resting chondrocytes proliferate, differentiate into a hypertrophic form, and finally become terminal hypertrophic chondrocytes before giving rise to bone. Because growth occurs when proliferation exceeds cell death, alterations in cell death by apoptosis, which is essential for the maintenance of tissue homeostasis, could affect growth. READ MORE

  5. 10. Involvement of Heparan Sulphate Biosynthesis and Turnover in Cell Proliferation. A Novel Role for Nitric Oxide in Recycling of Heparan Sulphate Proteoglycans

    Author : Katrin Mani; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nitrite.; nitric oxide; growth-inhibition; xyloside; glypican; heparan sulphate; Proteoglycan; glycosaminoglycan; Clinical biology; Klinisk biologi;

    Abstract : The present investigation focuses on the role of HS metabolism in cell proliferation. The effect of the HS priming ß-D-xyloside, 2-(6-hydroxynaphthyl)-O-ß-D-xylopyranoside (Xyl-2-Nap-6-OH) on the proliferation of normal and transformed cells was studied. READ MORE
