  1. 1. Nutrient Limitation of Bacterial Growth in Soil

    Author : Fredrik Demoling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ekologi; Ecology; Fertilization; Bacteria; Soil; Fungi; Thymidine or Leucine incorporation; Growth limitation; Phosphorus; Nitrogen; Carbon;

    Abstract : Lack of carbon has been assumed to be the most common limiting factor for bacterial growth in soil, although there are reports of limitation by nitrogen and phosphorus. I have studied nutrient limitation of bacterial growth in soil using a novel technique, where thymidine or leucine incorporation is used to detect changes in growth rates after adding nutrients. 2. 2. Metapopulation and metacommunity processes, dispersal strategies and life-history trade-offs in epiphytes

    Author : Swantje Löbel; Håkan Rydin; Tord Snäll; Lars E. Ericson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; asexual; biodiversity; bryophytes; dispersal limitation; establishment; evolution of reproductive traits; germination; growth; habitat fragmentation; landscape dynamics; local processes; patch-tracking; pH; reproduction; species richness; species interactions; Other biology; Övrig biologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about metapopulation and metacommunity processes in patchy, dynamic landscapes, using epiphytic bryophytes as a model system. Host trees and deciduous forest stands in the coniferous landscape are patchy, temporal and undergo changes in habitat quality during succession. READ MORE

  3. 3. Forest-stream linkages : Experimental studies of foraging and growth of brown trout (Salmo trutta L)

    Author : Pär Gustafsson; Eva Bergman; Larry Greenberg; John Armstrong; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Brown trout; diet; growth; riparian zone; forest-stream linkages; terrestrial invertebrates; light; primary production; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Riparian vegetation along streams and rivers affects the aquatic community in numerous ways and often operates as a link for energy flux between forest and streams. The studies presented in this licentiate thesis focus on light and terrestrial invertebrates, two factors influenced by riparian zone structure, which potentially affect stream ecosystems and thus also brown trout (Salmo trutta). 4. 4. Effects of temperature and terrestrial carbon on primary production in lake ecosystems

    Author : Mohammed Hamdan; Jan Karlsson; Pär Byström; Erin R. Hotchkiss; Lars-Anders Hansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lakes; primary production; benthic; pelagic; carbon dioxide limitation; light limitation; nutrient limitation; browning; warming; allochthonous carbon; grazing; trophic cascades;

    Abstract : Climate warming is predicted to affect northern lake food webs in two ways: (1)directly via changes in water temperature and ice conditions, and (2) indirectlyvia changes in catchment characteristics and processes that influence input ofallochthonous coloured dissolved organic matter (cDOM) and nutrients. Input ofcDOM increases carbon dioxide (CO2) availability, causes brownification andreduced light conditions, and may increase nutrient availability especially forpelagic primary producers. READ MORE

  5. 5. Modelling loading and growth of long bones Modelling loading and growth of long bones

    Author : Priti Yadav; Elena Gutierrez-Farewik; Anders Eriksson; Eva Pontén; Hanna Isaksson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Growth Plate; Finite element analysis; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : The long bones grow by the process of endochondral ossification, which occurs at the growth plate. This process is regulated by biological factors and mechanical factors. The biological factors which contribute to endochondral ossification process are genes, hormones, nutrients etc. The mechanical factor is the load acting on the bone. READ MORE
