  1. 11. The effects of internally expressed Contact-Dependent growth Inhibition (CDI) toxins in bacteria

    Author : Magnus Stårsta; Sanna Koskiniemi; Pierre Genevaux; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bacteria, both pathogenic and non-pathogenic, have developed multiple forms of competition mechanisms to combat each other including, but not limited to, Contact-Dependent growth Inhibition (CDI) systems, Type VI Secretion Systems and the associated Rearrangement hotspot (Rhs) toxin system. These systems usually confers a great fitness advantage as they allow for precise delivery of toxic molecules into competing bacteria whilst sister cells are protected from auto-inhibition by producing a cognate immunity protein. 2. 12. Mechanisms of Regulation of the Cell Cycle Inhibitor p21Waf1/Cip1 in TGF-β-Mediated Cell Growth Inhibition

    Author : Katerina Pardali; Aristidis Moustakas; Carl-Hernrik Heldin; Marikki Laiho; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; TGF-β; cell cycle; p21; Smad; signal transduction; transcription; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : TGF-β is the founding member of a multifunctional family of cytokines that regulate many aspects of cell physiology, including cell growth, differentiation, motility and death and play important roles in many developmental and pathological processes. TGF-β signals by binding to a heterotetrameric complex of type I and type II serine/threonine kinase receptors. READ MORE

  3. 13. Influence of Lactic Acid Fermentation on Enteropathogenic Bacteria. Growth Inhibition in Cereal Gruels and in Human Intestine

    Author : Rose Kingamkono; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; intestinal mucosal permeability; enteropathogenic bacteria; enterotoxins; lactic acid fermentation;

    Abstract : Togwa, a lactic-fermented cereal gruel, is widely consumed in Tanzania as a soft drink or used as a complementary food for young children. Studies were conducted to evaluate the potential of togwa to inhibit growth of common enteropathogenic bacteria and heat-labile (LT) enterotoxin production. READ MORE

  4. 14. Antibody responses in Plasmodium falciparum malaria and their relation to protection against the disease

    Author : Ahmed Kamal Bolad; Klavs Berzins; Lars Hviid; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; immunity; parasital immunology; Plasmodium falciparum malaria; antibody mediated invasion growth inhibition; Immunology; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Protective immunity against Plasmodium falciparum may be obtained after repeated exposure to infection. Several studies indicate that immunity against the blood stages of the P. Falciparum infection is mainly antibody mediated. READ MORE

  5. 15. Assessing the toxic impact of chemicals using bacteria

    Author : Jenny Gabrielson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bacteria; toxicity testing; ecotoxicity; phylogenetic diversity; growth inhibition;

    Abstract : There is a considerable backlog in the testing of new chemical compounds for their ecotoxic properties, mostly due to the lack of appropriate testing methods. In addition, there is a vivid debate today about the test endpoint for many of the existing methods. READ MORE
