  1. 16. Adaptation Along Environmental Gradients: an Evaluation of Physiological Mechanisms and Ecological Constraints

    Author : Beatrice Lindgren; Anssi Laurila; Jacob Höglund; Svante Winberg; Andrew Sih; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; Rana temporaria; latitudinal clines; growth rate; growth efficiency; SMR; predation; competition; trade-off; Biologi;

    Abstract : For ectotherms living in seasonal environments, time available for development and growth is often constrained by the length of the growth season. Declining season length towards higher latitudes often select for latitudinal clines in development and growth rates, exhibiting increasing growth and developmental rates towards the north. 2. 17. Metabolic Engineering of Recombinant Protein Production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Zihe Liu; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; recombinant protein production; genome sequencing; DNA microarray; insulin precursor; growth rate; UV mutation; yeast; anaerobic electron acceptor; secretory pathway; unfolded protein response; metabolic engineering; systems biology; α-amylase;

    Abstract : The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a widely used cell factory for the production of fuels, chemicals, and it also provides a platform for the production of many heterologous proteins of medical or industrial interest. In this thesis, random and rational approaches, such as vector design, host engineering, fermentation analysis, UV Mutation, coupled with high-throughput systems biology techniques (including whole genomic sequencing, microarray analysis and flux analysis) and integrated analysis (Reporter feature technique), were employed to engineer cellular properties more effectively and purposefully to construct cell factories for protein production. 4. 19. Interplay Between Environment and Genes on Morphological Variation in Perch – Implications for Resource Polymorphisms

    Author : Jens Olsson; Peter Eklöv; Mats Björklund; Richard Svanbäck; Andrew P. Hendry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Ecology; Perch; Resource polymorphism; Genetic differentiation; Phenotypic plasticity; Morphology; Competition; Character divergence; Behavior; Growth rate; Resource level; Gut lenght; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Recent research has suggested that individual specialization within populations could be substantial and more common than previously acknowledged. Eurasian perch is one of many species of fish in lakes of postglacial origin that displays a morphological and dietary variation tightly coupled to the littoral and pelagic habitats of the lake. 5. 20. Parental and embryonic behaviours in precocial birds

    Author : Irene Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pheasants; growth rate; oxygen consumption; hatch synchronization; incubation behaviour; nest predation; physical condition; Egg laying; primary sex ratio; mallards; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with behaviours during reproduction in precocial birds, both from the perspective of the female and of the embryos. Female pheasants in good physical condition laid larger eggs and produced a higher proportion of daughters than females in poor condition. READ MORE
