  1. 1. Effects of Orexins, Guanylins and Feeding on Duodenal Bicarbonate Secretion and Enterocyte Intracellular Signaling

    Author : Magnus Wilhelm Bengtsson; Gunnar Flemström; Olof Nylander; Karl E. O. Åkerman; Per M. Hellström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physiology; alkaline secretion; carbohydrates; central nervous system; cholinergic stimulation; duodenum; enteric nervous system; enterochromaffin cell; fasting; feeding; glucose; guanylyl cyclase C; humans; hypocretin; intra-arterial; in situ; intracerebroventricular; luminal acid; luzindole; orexin-B; SB-334867; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The duodenal epithelium secretes bicarbonate ions and this is regarded as the primary defence mechanism against the acid discharged from the stomach. For an efficient protection, the duodenum must also function as a sensory organ identifying luminal factors. READ MORE

  2. 2. Oxygen sensing in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Author : Lina Zhao; Changchun Chen; Simon Tuck; Helena Edlund; Marc Pilon; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; C. elegans; acute hypoxia; G-protein; mitochondrial ROS; neuropeptide; GPCR;

    Abstract : Sufficient supply of oxygen (O2) to tissue is essential for survival of aerobicanimals. In mammals, there are constant homeostatic regulation mechanisms that act on different time scales to maintain optimal O2 delivery to tissues. The ability to detect and respond to acute oxygen shortages is indispensable to aerobic life. READ MORE

  3. 3. Neuropeptides, 'gaseous' messengers and classic transmitters : electrophysiological and histochemical studies on coexistence and interactions in the nervous system

    Author : Zhi-Qing David Xu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Dorsal root ganglion; galanin; hippocampus; 5-hydroxytryptamine; locus coeruleus; nerve injury; nitric oxide; noradrenaline.;

    Abstract : The distribution and functional role of neuropeptides were studied, with special reference to galanin (GAL) and the free radical nitric oxide (NO). In developing systems GAL expression was observed already at E14 in trigeminal and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and at E15 in sensory epithelia in ear, eye and nose, as well as at E19 during bone formation. 4. 4. Biomarker mRNAs for staging and prognosis of colorectal cancer

    Author : Lina Ohlsson; Marie-Louise Hammarström; John Shively; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; colorectal cancer; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Mesenteric lymph node (ln) metastasis is the single most important prognostic characteristic in colorectal cancer (CRC). The ln status is used for staging and is a decisive selection criterion for postoperative adjuvant therapy. However, it is difficult to accurately determine ln status by routine histopathology (H&E).
