  1. 6. Molecular Genetic Studies on Prostate and Penile Cancer

    Author : Patiyan Andersson; Peter Söderkvist; Mattias Höglund; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; IRS1; penile cancer; hTERT; FHIT; PIK3CA; HRAS; KRAS; NRAS; BRAF; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : This thesis is comprised of two parts. In the first part we study the influence of four frequently disputed genes on the susceptibility for developing prostate cancer, and in the second part we attempt to establish a basic understanding of the molecular genetic events in penile cancer. 2. 7. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) expression : the role of histone modification and alternative splicing

    Author : Zheng Ge; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Telomerase, an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase responsible for telomeric DNA elongation, is silent in most normal differentiated human cells due to the tight repression of its catalytic unit, telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), whereas constitutive hTERT expression and telomerase activation are prerequisites for cellular immortalization/malignant transformation. As reconfiguration of chromatin acts like a master on/off switch, determining whether particular genes are active or inactive, the project was specifically designed to first elucidate molecular strategies that integrate diverse signalling pathways at the hTERT chromatin and consequently result in telomerase activation or repression in normal and malignant human cells. 3. 8. Telomerase activity and its regulation in malignant hematopoietic cells

    Author : Dawei Xu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : hTERT mortalization malignancy activity telomerase regulation;

    Abstract : Telomerase, a multicomponent ribonucleoprotein, synthesizes TTAGGG telomeric repeats essential for the stability and integrity of chromosomes. Most normal human somatic cells exhibit undetectable telomerase activity. READ MORE

  4. 9. Molecular and cytogenic studies of oncogene alterations in human breast and cervical carcinomas

    Author : Anju Zhang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Breast cancer; cervical cancer; oncogene; gene amplification; hTERT;

    Abstract : Characterization of human tumors with associated genetic changes is of importance for better understanding the tumor's basic biological behavior and of great value for clinical management of cancer patients. We therefore investigated oncogene amplifications in human breast and cervical carcinomas using molecular and cytogenetic methods, especially FISH. READ MORE

  5. 10. Molecular studies of acute myeloid leukemia and the telomerase reverse transcriptase gene

    Author : Charlotta Lindvall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Aacute myeloid leukaemia; telomerase hTERT; cancer cytogenetics; spectral karyotyping; gene expression profiling;

    Abstract : Multiple chromosome rearrangements (MCRs) are detected in approximately 10% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and are associated with an adverse prognosis. Comprehensive analysis of the chromosome rearrangements in these complex karyotypes has previously been hampered by the limitations of conventional cytogenetic techniques such as G-banding. READ MORE
