    Keywords : Haematological malignancies; febrile neutropenia; bacteraemia; Candida; oral antibiotic; risk stratification; FUO; cefepime; splenectomy; pneumococcal vaccine;

    Abstract : Infectious complications are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematological diseases, especially during chemotherapy induced neutropenia. This study was undertaken with the ultimate goal to improve the clinical management of infections in patients with hematological diseases. READ MORE

  2. 2. Central venous access devices in patients with haematological malignancies care, complications and home treatment

    Author : Eva Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Central venous access devices; haematological malignancies; dressing changes; self-administration; ambulatory; stem cell collection;

    Abstract : A well functioning central venous access device (CVAD) that will remain in situ free from complications during the entire treatment period, is highly desirable in the management of patients with aggressive haematological malignancies. Unfortunately, such a goal is not likely to be achieved due to the high rate of CVAD-related complications. READ MORE

  3. 3. Risk factors for haematological malignancies : immune-mediated diseases, body mass index and magnetic fields

    Author : Karin Söderberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Leukaemia; lymphoma; myeloma; risk factors; allergic conditions; asthma; autoimmune diseases; body mass index; electromagnetic fields; epidemiology;

    Abstract : Haematological malignancies constitute approximately 7% of all cancer cases in Sweden, and leukaemia is in fact the most common malignancy among children. The few established risk factors, such as ionising radiation and immunodeficiency, only explain a small number of the cases. READ MORE

  4. 4. Indicators of apoptosis and proliferation in haematological malignancies : with special reference to drug resistance and prognosis

    Author : Barbara MacNamara; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acute Myeloid Leukaemia; Non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma Drug Resistance; Predictive Factor; International Prognostic Index; Apoptosis; Proliferation; Telomerase; BCL-2; BAX; p53;

    Abstract : Successful treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (HG- NHL) is hampered by development of drug resistance. A better understanding of mechanisms responsible for drug resistance and the identification of factors that predict response to therapy is essential to improve treatment. READ MORE

  5. 5. The clinical perspective on malignancies in renal transplanted patients

    Author : Vivan Hellström; Tomas Lorant; Gunnar Tufveson; Gunilla Enblad; Per Lindnér; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : renal transplantation; malignant tumours;

    Abstract : Post-transplant malignancies cause significant morbidity and mortality. In this thesis we investigated malignancies in renal transplanted patients from a clinical viewpoint. The use of regional tumour registries considerably improved identification of pre- and post-transplant malignancies, which are generally underreported in transplant registries. READ MORE
