  1. 6. Cardiac morphology and dynamics in Swedish elite orienteers : Evaluation of the right and left ventricle by two-dimensional and doppler echocardiography

    Author : Egil Henriksen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Echocardiography; sudden unexpected death in young orienteers; right and left ventricular measurements; Doppler echocardiography in athletes; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Physiology; klinisk fysiologi;

    Abstract : Background. Between 1979 and 1992, 16 (15 males and 1 female) sudden unexpected cardiac deaths(SUCD) were reported in Swedish orienteers. Compared with previous reports in young athletes there was a 10- to 100-fold increase in the sudden death rate in young male elite orienteers during this period. The mean age was 25 years (range 18-32 years). READ MORE

  2. 7. Monitoring principles for haemodialysis

    Author : Roger Andersson; Olof Lindahl; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with non-invasive monitoring techniques for haemodialysis. Three applications in particular have been investigated: Blood pressure measurements in the extra corporal circuit, the relationship between UV measurements and dialysate urea concentration and photoplethysmography (PPG) in haemodialysis patients. 3. 8. The new old normal : reassessing perioperative oxygen consumption and haemodynamics in the elderly

    Author : Julia Jakobsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Perioperative haemodynamic instability and disturbances of global oxygen transport are associated with complications and organ injury after surgery. The continuously growing population of elderly in surgical care are at higher risk due to age-related cardiovascular alterations and increased prevalence of comorbidities. READ MORE

  4. 9. Microvascular inflammatory response in the skin

    Author : Vladimir Evilevitch; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; Physiology; Fysiologi; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; medical instrumentation; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics; sodium nitroprusside; terbutaline; anandamide; TRPV1; skin prick test; vanilloid receptor; skin microcirculation; laser Doppler imaging; Plasma exudation; vasodilatation;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the microvascular inflammatory response in the skin. The microvascular response includes vasodilatation and plasma exudation. In the first three studies, the combined response was measured in guinea pig skin with a technique based on detection of radiolabelled protein. READ MORE

  5. 10. The effect of anaesthesia and adrenergic therapy on the distribution and elimination of a crystalloid solution studied by volume kinetic analysis

    Author : Carl-Arne Ewaldsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Intravenous fluid therapy is a mandatory treasure during anaesthesia and surgery. It is sometimes combined with adrenergic therapy to maintain haemodynamic stability. It is of great importance to know how the body handles the distribution of fluid in these circumstances in order to minimize the risk of fluid overload. READ MORE
