  1. 21. Hand function, activity limitation and health-related quality of life in patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis

    Author : Malin Regardt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) are rare idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Common clinical features are proximal muscle weakness and reduced muscle endurance, which can lead to activity limitation and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). READ MORE

  2. 22. Cardiovascular function after long-term bed rest

    Author : Jonas Spaak; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Microgravity; simulated weightlessness; carotid baroreflex; static exercise; muscle chemoreflex; orthostasis; tilting; leg exercise; blood pressure; heart rate; stroke volume;

    Abstract : On earth, daily activities involve standing, changes of posture and various types of muscle action, all of which challenge the cardiovascular regulation. Removal of the orthostatic stress for a longer period, as during spaceflight or head-down tilt bed rest, consistently results in cardiovascular deconditioning. READ MORE

  3. 23. Human responses to cold and wind

    Author : Désirée Gavhed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bradycardia; blood pressure; clothing insulation; cold; exercise; heart rate; IREQ; mean skin temperature; metabolic rate; rectal temperature; subjective ratings; wind; Wind Chill Index; work.;

    Abstract : Cold is stressful for the human being and has physical, subjective and physiological effects. Body cooling must be prevented to provide for the worker's comfort and safety in cold workplaces. READ MORE

  4. 24. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation

    Author : Johan Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sensory nerves; neuropeptides; nasal mucosa; nitric oxide; vascular regulation; acoustic rhinometry; NK1-receptors; CGRP-receptors; vanilloid receptors; capsaicin; lactic acid; exercise; a-adrenoceptor agonists; pig; human.;

    Abstract : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects. 5. 25. Aerobic capacity in rheumatoid arthritis : aspects of associations with cardiovascular risk factors and disease activity

    Author : Lars Ångström; Anna Södergren; Solveig Wållberg Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic and inflammatory disease that has been associated with an increased morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Low aerobic capacity is one of the strongest independent risk factors for CVD and all-cause mortality in the general population. READ MORE
