11. Synthesis and characterization of nanocarbons as reinforced particles in metal composites
Abstract : In this work, several scientific problems related to high pressure–high temperature (HP–HT) synthesis of new materials using fullerite as a precursor were studied: first, the mechanism of the transformation of C60 crystal into a nano-clustered graphene phase (NGP) at a pressure of 8 GPa; and second, the effect of disorder introduced into C60 crystals by ball milling prior to HP–HT synthesis on the structure and properties of the NGP. A separate set of experiments was devoted to compression of C60 precursor at unexplored before pressure of 25 GPa and elevated temperatures in search for new type of disordered carbon-based materials. 12. Sputtered Carbon Nitride Thin Films
Abstract : The relation between the growth conditions and the film structure and properties of reactively magnetron sputtered carbon nitride CNx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) thin films has been studied. The growth of CNx films has been studied when varying the process parameters, such as substrate temperature, N2 (partial) pressure and ion flux. READ MORE

13. Fiber Optic Sensors for Monitoring of Lithium- and Sodium-ion Batteries
Abstract : Rechargeable batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, have rapidly evolved since their introduction and now dominate the market, owing primarily to their high energy and power densities. With growing demand for high-performance batteries in portable electronics and electric vehicles, the need for safe, efficient, and reliable batteries is crucial. READ MORE

14. Carbon reinforced UHMWPE composites for orthopaedic applications : characterization and biological response to wear particles
Abstract : Joint replacements have considerably improved the quality of life of patients with joints damaged by disease or trauma. However, problems associated with wear particles generated due to the relative motion between the components of the bearing are still present and can lead to the eventual failure of the implant. 15. Fate of organic carbon in a tropical mangrove ecosystem
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study the budget and fluxes of organic carbon in a tropical mangrove forest. Maruhubi forest is located in the Island of Zanzibar, East Africa. Aspects of structure and functions of the ecosystem are investigated. READ MORE
