    Author : Anna Östergren; Eva Brittebo; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; Anne-Lie Svensson; Hans Tjälve; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; β-carboline; neuromelanin; norharman; harman; parkinsonism; Parkinson s disease; motoric impairment; behaviour; glia cells; substantia nigra; dopamine melanin; PC12 cells; ER stress; grp78; hsp90; cytochrome P450; CYP1A1; CYP1B1; blood-brain interfaces; 7; 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; endothelial cell; smooth muscle cell; bioactivation; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Abstract : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. READ MORE

  3. 3. Debunking Debunked? : Challenges, Prospects, and the Threat of Self-Defeat

    Author : Conrad Bakka; Jonas Olson; Eriksson Björn; Folke Tersman; Stockholms universitet; []

Debunkers have since come to take on substantial and broad-ranging epistemological commitments. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modifying Cooking Practices to Reduce the Formation of Heterocyclic Amines

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; cancer; frying; mutagens; beefburger; chicken; heterocyclic amines; cooking;

    Abstract : Commonly cooked meat dishes contain heterocyclic amines (HAs) at ng/g levels. HAs are animal carcinogens, form DNA adducts in human tissues, and have been associated with increased risk of cancer in epidemiological studies, and it is thus recommended that human intake be decreased. 5. 5. Mitochondrial DNA mutations : brain developmental and ageing consequences, and possible treatments

    Author : Jaime M Ross; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Ageing is a complex process that involves cellular senescence, a gradual loss of tissue homeostasis, and decline in organ function. Abundant evidence implicates mitochondria in ageing suggesting: (i) accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage, (ii) progressive respiratory chain dysfunction, and (iii) increased reactive oxygen species production.
