  1. 1. Vegetation and land-use in the Småland Uplands, southern Sweden, during the last 6000 years

    Author : Per Lagerås; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geologi; physical geography; Sweden; Geology; Småland Uplands; land-use history; pollen analysis; Holocene vegetation history; mineral magnetic analysis; AMS dating; clearance cairns; hay production; shifting cultivation; Picea migration; slash-and-burn cultivation; fysisk geografi;

    Abstract : Palaeoecological methods were applied to peat and sediment cores recovered from one bog (Bråtamossen) and two lakes (Avegöl and Femtingagölen) in the Småland Uplands, southern Sweden. The general aim was to reconstruct the landuse and vegetation history for the last 6000 years in this agriculturally marginal region. READ MORE

  2. 2. There is no easy answer : Factors affecting meat quality in lambs

    Author : Elin Stenberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis examined the effects of production system, slaughter method, carcass handling procedures and storage method on the quality of meat from intact male lambs. Quality aspects of the meat assessed were carcass quality, meat quality indicators (measured on carcasses), technological meat quality (measured on meat samples) and sensory attributes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Feeding cassava foliage to sheep : nutrient properties and hydrogen cyanide toxicity

    Author : Khuc Thi Hue; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The potential of cassava foliage (Manihot esculenta Crantz) as a protein-rich feed in sheep production in Vietnam was examined by studying cassava foliage yield, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) content, toxicity and performance of lambs fed the foliage as a supplement. Cassava foliage fed ad libitum as a protein supplement to a basal diet of urea-treated rice straw gave similar lamb live weight gain (LWG) as diets supplemented with commercial concentrate or protein-rich foliage of stylosanthes (Stylosanthes guianensis) or jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). 4. 4. Small-scale combustion of agricultural biomass fuels

    Author : Lara Carvalho; Markus Broström; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy Engineering; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : The ambitious targets of the European Union in increasing the use of renewable energies to 20% of Europe’s energy needs, call for urgent changes, including in the biomass sector. The share of solid biomass for heating purposes could be further increased by replacing oil- and gas-fired furnaces with biomass boilers and by expanding the spectrum of biomass raw materials for small-scale combustion systems. 5. 5. Filamentous fungi in wrapped forages

    Author : Jessica Schenck; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Wrapped forages of higher dry matter (DM) concentrations (> 50 %), also referred to as haylage are common in Sweden and Norway. Such forages are preserved by a combination of semi-drying and anaerobic storage leading to an environment that may affect the composition of filamentous fungi differently than in hay or silage.
