  1. 11. Hazard screening of contaminated sites : bioavailable fractions and biological in vitro tools

    Author : Daniel Ragnvaldsson; Mats Tysklind; Per Leffler; Lars Lövgren; Bengt-Erik Bengtsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hazard screening; bioavailability; metal pollution; in vitro cytotoxicity; water extraction; CCA; arsenic genotoxicity; genotoxicity; Contaminated soil; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The environmental bioavailability of contaminants, rather than their total concentrations in the soil compartment play a decisive role for the risks associated with contaminated sites. Various soil constituents and abiotic conditions have strong influence on bioavailability, which may vary substantially between different locations. READ MORE

  2. 12. Grasping complexity: analysing risk for sustainable development

    Author : Per Becker; Lunds universitets centrum för riskanalys och riskhantering (LUCRAM); []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; design; sustainable development; Development; risk; risk analysis; sustainability science; disaster; value; hazard; vulnerability; system; capability; human-environment systems; systems approach; design science.;

    Abstract : Sustainable development relies on our ability to make decisions today that will determine our tomorrow. Given that uncertainty is explicitly allowed to influence our view of what the future holds for us, most ex ante analyses of challenges for sustainable development can be viewed as analysing risk. 3. 13. Numerical methods for wave propagation in solids containing faults and fluid-filled fractures

    Author : Ossian O'Reilly; Jan Nordström; Per Lötstedt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis develops numerical methods for the simulation of wave propagation in solids containing faults and fluid-filled fractures. These techniques have applications in earthquake hazard analysis, seismic imaging of reservoirs, and volcano seismology. A central component of this work is the coupling of mechanical systems. 4. 14. Uncertainty, variability and environmental risk analysis

    Author : Monika Filipsson; Tomas Öberg; Bo Bergbäck; Lars Rosén; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : Contaminated land; exposure assessment; exposure factors; risk analysis; risk perception; uncertainty; variability; probabilistic risk assessment; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : The negative effects of hazardous substances and possible measures that can be taken are evaluated in the environmental risk analysis process, consisting of risk assessment, risk communication and risk management. Uncertainty due to lack of knowledge and natural variability are always present in this process. READ MORE

  5. 15. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence

    Author : David Aníbal Monterroso Juárez; Ota Kulhánek; Stefan Wiemer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; b-value; seismic hazard; Monte Carlo; seismic quiescence; Central America; stress; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN.
