  1. 21. Diagnosis of interatrial shunts and the influence of patent foramen ovale on oxygen desaturation in obstructive sleep apnea

    Author : Magnus C Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Patent foramen ovale; atrial septal defect; obstructive sleep apnea; contrast transesophageal echocardiography; percutaneous closure;

    Abstract : Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is found in 27% of the population and although mostly asymptomatic, PFO has been associated with e.g. cryptogenic stroke and, rarely, also with oxygen desaturation. PFO and atrial septal defects may nowadays be closed percutaneously without open heart surgery. READ MORE

  2. 22. Physiological changes in mice deficient in different subtypes of thyroid hormone receptors : a focus on studies of heart and muscle

    Author : Catarina Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : heart rate; ECG; body temperature; [beta]-adrenergic receptor density; thyroid hormone; isometric twitch; SERCa;

    Abstract : The aim of these studies was to determing the specific roles of the different subtypes of thyroid hormone receptors (TR), with focus on heart and muscle function, by using mice deficient in TR[alpha]1, TR[beta] (both TR[beta]1 and TR[beta]2 subtypes) and TR[alpha]1/[beta]. For this purpose, new techniques were set up to study various physiological parameters in these mice. READ MORE

  3. 23. Darier disease : more than skin deep

    Author : Philip Curman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Darier disease (DD) is a severe, inherited dermatological disorder with a characteristic clinical and histopathological appearance. It is caused by mutations in the ATP2A2 gene, encoding a Ca2+ pump in the endoplasmic reticulum, Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+-ATPase 2 (SERCA2), which has been found to be an essential regulator of cellular Ca2+ homeostasis. 4. 24. Multifunctional Biomimetic Scaffolds Tailored for Cardiac Regeneration

    Author : Abeni Wickham; Daniel Aili; Bo Liedberg; Carsten Werner; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Nature has had millions of years to perfect the structural components of the human body, but has also produced the dysfunctions that result in the cancers and diseases, which ruin that perfection. Congenital heart defects, and myocardial infarction lead to scarring that remodels heart muscle, decreasing the contractility of the heart, with profound consequences for the host. READ MORE
