  1. 1. Heat exposure and health outcomes in Costa Rican sugarcane harvesters

    Author : Jennifer Crowe; Maria Nilsson; Tord Kjellström; Catharina Wesseling; Linda Forst; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Agricultural worker; Central America; Chronic kidney disease; Climate change; Dehydration; Heat; Heat illness; Heat stress; Sugarcane; Urinalysis; Worker health; folkhälsa; Public health; Epidemiology; epidemiologi;

    Abstract : Background The remarkably efficient mechanisms of the human body to maintain its core temperature of 37°C can be inadequate when harsh climatic conditions and excessive muscle movement lead to heat stress, dehydration and potential heat illness, ranging from minor symptoms such as fatigue to a potentially fatal heat stroke. Agricultural workers in the tropics are at high risk, which is expected to increase with climate change. READ MORE

  2. 2. Neonatal water and heat exchange : The influence of environmental factors and infant maturity

    Author : Gunnar Sjörs; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Neonatal; transepidermal water loss; respiratory water loss; radiant heat; heat exchange; water loss; incubators; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : The environment provided by commonly used infant incubators, the effect of radiantheat and exposure to cold air on the exchange of water and heat between newborninfants and their environment, and the water loss through the skin of infants born at24-25 weeks of gestation were investigated. The evaporation of water from the skinwas measured by the gradient method. READ MORE

  3. 3. Polyurethane - occupational exposure, biomarkers and symptoms

    Author : Margareta Littorin; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spray; polyurethane; nose; metabolites; lung function ; lower airways; inflammation; heat; glue; genetic polymorphism; di isocyanate; Antibodies; biomarkers; Occupational health; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; symptoms;

    Abstract : Isocyanates may cause occupational asthma, rhinitis, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. However, the mechanisms behind initiation of the disorders and the relations between exposure and effect are insufficiently elucidated. Means to biomonitor exposure and risk would be valuable. 4. 4. Occupational heat exposure and kidney disease - Studies on the role of heat stress in the Mesoamerican epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of non-traditional origin

    Author : Erik Hansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heat stress; heat strain; chronic kidney disease; acute kidney injury; occupational medicine;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the association between heat stress and kidney disease in Mesoamerica using different perspectives and methods. An ecologic study found that hot, sugarcane-cultivating regions had elevated chronic kidney disease (CKD) mortality. READ MORE

  5. 5. Short-term effects of ambient temperature on daily deaths and hospital admissions

    Author : Joacim Rocklöv; Bertil Forsberg; Jan Semenza; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; temperature; humidity; weather; climate; climate change; hot; heat; cold; cold spell; cold wave; heat wave; health; hospitalization; hospital admission; death; mortality; morbidity; epidemiology; environmental epidemiology; time series; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; Occupational and Environmental Medicine; arbets- och miljömedicin;

    Abstract : Background: Incidence of death and hospitalizations have been observed to depend on short-term changes in weather and to increase with extreme temperatures. This thesis aims to strengthen the scientific knowledge on the relationship between temperature and daily deaths, but also the relationship between temperature and daily hospital admissions. READ MORE
