6. Improving emergency braking performance of heavy vehicles
Abstract : Previous studies by the Cambridge Vehicle Dynamics Consortium (CVDC) have suggested that, by improving the control bandwidth of conventional Heavy Goods Vehicle(HGV) brake actuators and using a ‘slip control’ braking strategy, HGV stopping distances could be reduced by up to 30% over existing systems. The work covered in this thesis looks to: validate the CVDC’s previous braking performance predictions through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation, investigate how in-plane tyre dynamics may influence such a system’s performance, develop and build a next generation high-bandwidth braking system for vehicle implementation and carry out comparative back-to-back vehicle tests between the new system and commercially available HGV ABS. 7. Advances In Heavy Vehicle Dynamics with Focus on Engine Mounts and Individual Front Suspension
Abstract : The main objective of the research presented in this thesis is to enhance driver comfort and handling of a heavy truck that in turn leads to better vehicle safety and stability. The focus has been put on studying two suspension systems of the truck, engine and front axle suspensions, due to their significant impact on the dynamic performance of the vehicle. READ MORE

8. Traffic Situation Management for Driving Automation of Articulated Heavy Road Transports - From driver behaviour towards highway autopilot
Abstract : In this thesis traffic situation management for driving automation of long combination vehicles is discussed. The automation targets high-speed driving in multiple-lane, one-way roads. Traffic situation predictions, traffic situation manoeuvres and driving principles are studied specifically. READ MORE

9. Transportation Mission-Based Optimization of Heavy Combination Road Vehicles and Distributed Propulsion, Including Predictive Energy and Motion Control
Abstract : This thesis proposes methodologies to improve heavy vehicle design by reducing the total cost of ownership and by increasing energy efficiency and safety. Environmental issues, consumers expectations and the growing demand for freight transport have created a competitive environment in providing better transportation solutions. READ MORE

10. Exploring Heavy Vehicle Interaction : Interaction design studies of industrial vehicle operators' information awareness using mixed reality
Abstract : The work presented in this dissertation is in the field of interaction design through visual interaction with information systems in heavy industrial vehicles within agriculture, forestry, and construction. The dissertation investigates how interaction technologies and the application of interaction design methods can be used to provide an efficient interaction and a good user experience for the operator interacting with the heavy vehicle information system.
