1. Cooperative Reactive Sites in Designed Helix-Loop-Helix Polypeptide Catalysts
Abstract : Designed polypeptides, which fold into helix-loop-helix motifs and dimerise to four-helix bundles have been used as scaffolds for the introduction of catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl esters. The reactive sites were based on the reactivity of histidine, and two His residues separated by four residues in the sequence was shown to be the minimal reactive site for the efficient hydrolysis of nitrophenyl esters. 2. Calcium regulation and functions of basic Helix-Loop-Helix transcription factors
Abstract : The members of the ubiquitously expressed E-protein subfamily of basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors, E12/E47, SEF2-1 and HEB, have important roles as regulators of gene expression in various differentiation processes, including lymphocyte development and myogenesis. In myogenesis, E-proteins are proposed to function as obligate heterodimer partners for members of the MyoD family of muscle-specific bHLH transcription factors. READ MORE

3. Regulation and functions of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors in neuroblastoma cells
Abstract : Neuroblastoma is a childhood tumor derived from primordial neural crest cells. The tumor cells exhibit a phenotype similar to that of developing neuroblasts, which indicates that the tumor arises due to perturbed differentiation of the sympathetic nervous system. READ MORE

4. Polypeptide-Based Nanoscale Materials
Abstract : Self-assembly has emerged as a promising technique for fabrication of novel hybrid materials and nanostructures. The work presented in this thesis has been focused on developing nanoscale materials based on synthetic de novo designed polypeptides. READ MORE

5. Cell cycle genes in chondrosarcoma. Involvement of the Id1 and p16 pathways
Abstract : Chondrosarcoma is a malignant, cartilaginous tumour arising from bone. The wide variationin morphology, behaviour and clinical outcome raise the question whether chondrosarcomasare several different but closely related tumours rather than a single entity. READ MORE
